Chapter 14

One year after the baby shower, Emily wore the same shawl again.
I noticed immediately.
She had almost thrown it away.
Then decided not to give fabric that much authority.
We attended a quiet dinner.
No gala.
No Hales.
She draped it loosely over her shoulders.
Halfway through dessert, Grace pulled it onto the floor.
Emily laughed.
That was all.
No symbolic burning.
No speech.
The shawl became cloth again.
I liked that.
Later she told me:
“I thought healing would feel bigger.”
“How does it feel?”
“Boring sometimes.”
Good.
Boring is underrated after fear.
Work.
Baby formula.
Laundry.
Ryan visiting on Saturdays.
Linda occasionally sending too many toys.
Ordinary boundaries.
No one bleeding.
May you like
No one whispering behind doors.
Boring was excellent.
