Chapter 13

Emily moved into her own house when Grace was six months old.
Not mine.
That surprised relatives.
They assumed after what happened she would remain under my roof forever.
No.
My protection was supposed to restore options, not become permanent dependence.
Small townhouse.
Garden.
Two bedrooms.
Close enough for dinner.
Far enough for privacy.
The first night, I installed nothing.
No extra guards beyond what Emily requested.
No cameras she did not ask for.
That was difficult for me.
Control masquerades as safety even when intention is loving.
I was learning from Ryan too, in the ways I least enjoyed.
Emily laughed when I asked whether she wanted a guard at the back gate.
“No.”
“What about—”
“No.”
I stopped.
She smiled.
“Good job.”
Apparently my daughter had become sarcastic during recovery.
Healthy.
Ryan saw Grace regularly by agreement with Emily.
Never inside her house.
Not yet.
He did not complain.
That mattered.
Linda saw her less.

Also accepted.
