Chapter 16

Five years after the shower, Emily attended another family celebration wearing a sleeveless dress.

I noticed her arms because once I could not stop seeing bruises there.

Now nothing.

But I did not stare.

That mattered too.

Grace was five.

Ryan attended separately.

Linda sat with Emily for part of dinner.

No performance of unity.

No hostility.

At one point Ryan reached instinctively toward Emily’s elbow to guide her around a waiter.

Stopped himself before touching.

Small.

She noticed.

So did I.

He moved his hand back.

No apology necessary.

Change visible in interruption.

Linda later whispered:

“I used to think family success meant nobody left.”

I looked at Emily laughing across the room.

“And now?”

May you like

“I think sometimes leaving is how people survive enough to return differently.”

Better.
