Chapter 12 - The email she never showed me
Police did not obtain Claire’s entire email account simply because I was her husband.
Her old exchange with Leah became relevant through several routes:
Paige had Leah’s saved copy.
Claire’s lawyer later produced her side in discovery.
The timestamps matched.
Leah’s original message:
March 14, five years earlier.
Subject:
Ryan / Nora.
Claire opened it within twenty minutes.
She replied forty-three minutes later.
No evidence she consulted me.
No evidence she called.
My phone records from that era were long gone from easy retrieval.
But I knew.
I was at work.
She never told me.
The most damaging line in Claire’s reply was not:
Ryan does not want contact.
She had not written that exactly.
She wrote:
Ryan has chosen his family and does not want to reopen what happened while we were separated.
That was a conclusion she invented from other conversations.
I had said:
“I want our family.”
I had said:
“I don’t want Leah in our relationship.”
I had never said:
If there is a child, hide it.
Claire later explained:
“I thought Leah was trying to pull you back.”
“With a baby?”
“I didn’t know the baby was yours.”
“She said possibility.”
“I thought it was manipulation.”
“Why not tell me?”
“Because I was terrified you would go to her.”
There.
Not logic.
Fear.
“What if Nora had been mine then?”
Claire cried.
“I didn’t let myself think about that.”
