Chapter 24 - Claire and Ethan
Claire’s relationship with Ethan survived differently.
He loved her.
Was angry.
Both.
At eight, he once refused a scheduled weekend.
“I don’t want Mom.”
Why?
“She made me lie.”
His therapist helped.
Claire did not force.
She wrote:
I’ll see you when you’re ready. I love you.
Two weeks later Ethan went.
The first night back, he called me.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“Mom locked bathroom.”
My body exploded internally.
Then:
“Because she was showering.”
I sat down.
Context.
“Okay.”
“She said I can call you if I get weird.”
Good.
Hypervigilance had transferred to him too.
We worked on it.
Claire became careful about doors.
Maybe too careful.
Eventually ordinary privacy returned.
She did not lose parental authority permanently.
If Ethan refused homework:
She could require homework.
If he threw a controller:
She could take it.
Accountability did not mean her child ran the house.
But one permanent rule remained:
No adult asks Ethan to keep a secret involving somebody’s safety or a major family fact.
Surprises expire.
