Chapter 7 - Claire’s first version

Claire was arrested that night.

Not dramatically.

No screaming.

After initial interviews and consultation with the prosecutor, police had probable cause for unlawful confinement and child-endangerment offenses.

She had knowingly locked a five-year-old child inside a service room for several hours.

She had blocked me from accessing the child.

She had lied to Paige about my knowledge.

Those were concrete acts.

She was released the next afternoon with conditions.

No contact with Nora.

No unsupervised contact with Ethan temporarily pending child-welfare assessment.

She moved into her sister Melanie’s apartment.

Our marriage became physically separate in less than twenty-four hours.

Claire’s first explanation came through her attorney.

She panicked.

She never intended Nora to remain in the room for more than an hour.

She intended to tell me as soon as she could:

“control the circumstances.”

She was afraid I would immediately leave with Nora.

Leave her?

Divorce?

Take Ethan?

All of it.

Her attorney wrote:

“Mrs. Carter was confronted with an emotionally destabilizing paternity claim and made profoundly poor decisions while attempting to protect her family.”

Protect.

That word made me furious.

She protected an image.

Not Nora.

Not Ethan.

Not me.

Maybe herself.

I wanted to write back.

My lawyer, Rebecca Sloan—family law this time—said:

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because your wife has a criminal lawyer and you are angry.”

“I want her to know—”

“She knows you’re angry.”

May you like

I hated every professional who kept preventing me from turning rage into documentation.

They were usually right.
