Chapter 25 - Nora stops calling me Ryan

It happened when she was seven.
Almost two years after the kitchen.
Not dramatic.
We were at a grocery store.
She wanted cereal with marshmallows.
I said no.
She said:
“Dad, please.”
I froze.
She did not.
“Dad.”
Again.
I looked at her.
“What?”
“The cereal.”
I stared too long.
She frowned.
“Why are you weird?”
“Nothing.”
“Can I?”
“No.”
“You’re mean.”
She walked away.
I stood beside the cereal shelf trying not to cry.
No ceremony.
No conversation about titles.
She had used Ryan for almost two years.
Sometimes:
my biological dad
when explaining to school friends.
Sometimes:
Ethan’s dad.
Then:
Dad.
Because language changed when she was ready.
Not because a court order gave me the word.
That evening I told Paige.
She smiled.
“About time.”
I laughed.
Then felt guilty.
Paige saw.
“Ryan.”
“What?”
“She can call you Dad and still love Leah.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
I was apparently surrounded by people professionally committed to asking that.
“Yes.”
Mostly.
Nora kept Leah’s photograph beside her bed.
Good.
No competition.
Dead mother.
Living father.
Aunt.
Half-brother.

Claire existed in the story as someone who hurt her, not family.
That was enough complexity for childhood.
