Claire faced charges for unlawful restraint/confinement and child endangerment.
The prosecution also reviewed whether her deception of Paige amounted to custodial interference or kidnapping.
The most dramatic charge was not pursued.
Why?
Paige voluntarily brought Nora to Claire’s house.
Claire did not abduct Nora from school or street.
She had temporary permission to care for her that morning, obtained through deception about my knowledge.
That deception mattered.
But the cleanest criminal conduct occurred later:
Locking Nora in the utility room.
Keeping her there after she wanted out.
Blocking my access when I discovered her.
Her older email to Leah was morally devastating but not itself a current kidnapping offense.
The prosecutor did not turn family betrayal into charges it could not support.
Good.
Claire’s lawyer challenged the felony-level theory.
Duration was several hours, not days.
Nora had water and food.
No serious injury.
Claire released? She did not voluntarily; police did.
Still serious.
Eventually plea negotiations focused on one felony child-endangerment/unlawful-restraint offense with a misdemeanor related count.
No attempted murder.
No child trafficking.
No decades in prison.
I gave a statement when asked.
I did not request maximum punishment.
I also did not ask for mercy on her behalf.
Claire was my wife.
Ethan’s mother.
Nora’s jailer for three hours.
The categories existed together.
