Chapter 1

“I never left this house.”

My head turned toward Bianca.

Slowly.

Evelyn’s fingers remained wrapped around mine beneath the lifted floor panel.

Her hand was cold.

Too thin.

But alive.

Behind me Ethan clutched my sleeve.

Anna stood frozen beside the vacuum cleaner, one hand covering her mouth.

Bianca whispered:

“She’s confused.”

Evelyn laughed.

Weak.

Broken.

Still unmistakably Evelyn.

“I’ve had eleven months to become very clear.”

Eleven.

The wedding had been eleven months ago.

Eleven months of waking up angry.

Eleven months of wondering which moment I missed.

Eleven months of telling myself the woman I loved had chosen disappearance instead of honesty.

I leaned down.

“Can you stand?”

She tried.

Couldn’t.

I climbed into the shallow chamber instead.

Only then did I understand it was not merely a cavity beneath the floor.

A narrow opening behind Evelyn led into darkness.

An old service crawlspace.

Large enough for a person to move through crouched.

This had been part of the original mansion.

Something I had never known existed.

Ethan suddenly whispered:

“Evie?”

Everything inside me stopped again.

I looked at my son.

His face had changed.

Not recognition exactly.

Something older.

A memory trying to wake.

Evelyn stared at him.

Tears filled her eyes instantly.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Bianca stepped forward.

“No.”

Too sharp.

Too frightened.

I looked at her.

“Why does my son recognize the woman you said abandoned us?”

Silence.

Evelyn gripped my hand harder.

Then she whispered:

“Because before Bianca made me disappear, Ethan used to call me Mom.”

I stared at her.

Evelyn had helped raise my son since he was six months old.

That part was true.

His biological mother, Clara, had died shortly after his birth.

Evelyn never replaced her.

Never tried.

But Ethan chose his own word eventually.

Mom.

After Evelyn vanished, he stopped saying it.

I had assumed children forgot.

Now Bianca looked terrified because perhaps he had not forgotten at all.

I lifted Evelyn into my arms.

As I carried her out from beneath the bridal suite, something small fell from the torn folds of her wedding dress.

A child’s wooden letter block.

The letter E.

Ethan reached for it immediately.

“That was mine.”

May you like

Evelyn closed her eyes.

And Bianca backed toward the door.
