Chapter 13

Anna became famous inside the household for finding Evelyn.

She hated that.

“I vacuumed.”

Exactly.

Everyone wanted the maid turned heroine.

Evelyn stopped it first.

“She did her job properly.”

Anna smiled.

Good.

Not every decent person needs promotion.

She remained housemaid because she liked the work and was studying interior restoration part-time.

Her discovery did change one thing.

Staff began reporting strange physical details more freely.

Loose floor.

Locked cabinet.

Unusual delivery.

Not because every oddity was conspiracy.

Because we had learned dismissing house knowledge as “maid stuff” could be catastrophic.

Anna once told me:

“The boiler sounds different.”

I nearly mobilized twelve men.

It needed cleaning.

We laughed later.

Useful correction.

Paranoia is not wisdom.

Attention is.

The old service corridors were opened, mapped internally, and converted into ordinary storage and maintenance access.

No secret chambers.

No mystical history.

Just architecture made visible.

Evelyn walked through them once with me.

Stopped outside the room where she had spent seven months.

I asked:

“Close it forever?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Rooms didn’t do this.”

Correct.

We turned it into linen storage.

Six months later she entered and took towels without reaction.

Small victory.

The bridal suite took longer.

She avoided it for almost two years.

Also fine.

Healing does not need symmetry.
