Chapter 12

Margaret asked to apologize to Evelyn.

Evelyn said no.

Six months later?

Still no.

A year later?

Yes.

Neutral garden.

Daylight.

I did not attend.

Evelyn told me afterward only what she wanted.

Margaret began:

“I was scared.”

Evelyn answered:

“So was I.”

Good.

Then Margaret admitted specific choices.

Food.

Locked doors.

Ignoring screams.

Believing Bianca’s authority.

Continuing after the first week when she knew there was no temporary crisis.

She did not say:

I had no choice.

Because she had choices.

Bad ones.

Dangerous ones.

Still choices.

Evelyn asked:

“Why didn’t you open the door when I begged?”

Margaret cried.

“Because then you would know I had become part of it.”

There.

Shame again.

Once exposed, people sometimes continue wrongdoing to postpone admitting they already did it.

Evelyn listened.

Then:

“You cared more about being seen as a good woman than doing the good thing.”

Margaret accepted that.

No forgiveness.

No hug.

But when they left, Evelyn said:

“I hope you stop hiding from what you did.”

Better than hatred.

Later I asked Evelyn how she felt.

“Lighter.”

“Forgave her?”

“No.”

Good distinction.

Understanding can reduce weight without restoring access.
