Chapter 3

The old service level had not appeared on any modern house plans.
The mansion was built in 1911.
Servants once moved through narrow corridors beneath entertaining rooms so guests rarely saw them.
Most were sealed during renovations decades ago.
Most.
Not all.
Bianca knew because our grandmother showed her the passages when we were children.
I had been twelve.
Bianca twenty-five.
Old enough to remember.
I remembered nothing.
That difference became useful to her.
Evelyn described her wedding morning.
She had been dressed.
Veil pinned.
Guests arriving downstairs.
Then Bianca came into the bridal suite alone.
Said Ethan had fallen near the west service stairs.
Evelyn ran.
Of course she did.
She followed Bianca through a narrow staff door hidden behind a wardrobe.
Down.
Across an unused laundry corridor.
Into a small servants’ sitting room.
No Ethan.
Instead Margaret Doyle stood there crying.
And Bianca locked the door.
I became still.
“Margaret helped?”
“At first.”
Meaning later?
Evelyn continued.
Bianca told her the wedding was cancelled.
Why?
Because I had learned something about Evelyn.
Something unforgivable.
“What?”
“She said you knew I planned to take Ethan away.”
I stared.
Evelyn had never planned that.
She knew.
Bianca knew too.
But the lie frightened her because Ethan had become the center of our relationship.
Bianca then told Evelyn that if she appeared upstairs, I would have my men remove her permanently from Ethan’s life.
She should leave quietly.
Evelyn refused.
So Bianca changed tactics.
She said Ethan had already been taken to another property for safety.
If Evelyn fought, she would never see him again.
Then Bianca left.
Hours later, Margaret returned with food.
Evelyn demanded release.
Margaret cried.
Would not open the outer door.
Why?
Because Bianca had told Margaret I was furious and ordered Evelyn confined until guests left.
My authority.
Again.
Borrowed without my knowledge.
By evening Margaret realized something was wrong.
She asked Bianca when I would come downstairs.
Bianca answered:
“Tomorrow.”
Tomorrow became three days.
Then one week.
Then it was too late for Margaret to pretend she had merely followed a temporary instruction.
Guilt trapped her beside Evelyn.
Bianca understood that perfectly.

One lie created the prison.
Shame maintained it.
