Chapter 9

We recovered Clara’s letters the next day.

I did not open Ethan’s.

Not yet.

They were his.

Twenty-three envelopes.

Ages written discreetly on the backs.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Ten.

Sixteen.

Wedding day.

First child.

Clara had written herself into a future she knew she would not see.

Bianca had tried to delete that future.

I found my own letter separately.

Unsealed.

Folded.

Clara’s handwriting faded slightly.

I read it alone.

No dramatic revelation about murder.

No hidden conspiracy.

Something worse because it was ordinary.

Clara loved Bianca.

Also feared her.

She wrote that Bianca entered every crisis by becoming indispensable, then treated gratitude like permanent authority.

After Ethan’s birth, Bianca dismissed two nurses without asking.

Moved feeding schedules.

Corrected Clara in front of staff.

Called the nursery “our room.”

Clara understood that after death, nobody would challenge the woman helping a grieving widower survive.

So she asked me:

Do not confuse the person who helps you through grief with the person entitled to own what remains afterward.

I read that line three times.

Bianca had indeed saved me.

After Clara died, I barely functioned for weeks.

She handled the house.

Ethan.

Meals.

Calls.

She deserved gratitude.

Then I gave her something larger by accident.

Unquestioned place.

Evelyn entered two years later and disrupted it.

Not by fighting Bianca.

By loving Ethan differently.

Without ownership.

When Ethan called Evelyn Mom, Bianca smiled publicly.

Then went home and hid another one of Clara’s letters.

Evelyn later told me she always sensed something strange.

Bianca would correct her when she comforted Ethan.

“He likes the blanket this way.”

“He sleeps better if you leave.”

“He doesn’t need you every time he cries.”

Small territorial claims.

Evelyn assumed older-sister expertise.

Again.

Everyone gave Bianca generous interpretations because she had earned some once.

Trust has inertia.

That is why betrayal can travel so far before stopping.
