Chapter 4

I found Margaret in Vermont.

Not hiding elegantly.

Living with her widowed sister.

She answered my call.

Then cried before I spoke.

Good.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because by the time I understood, I had already helped.”

There it was.

Margaret returned to the house two days later.

She looked twenty years older.

Evelyn refused to see her.

Her choice.

So Margaret spoke to me.

On the first wedding day, Bianca told her Evelyn had suffered a breakdown.

That she threatened to take Ethan.

That I wanted the bride kept away from guests until a physician arrived.

Plausible enough for three hours.

Then Bianca announced publicly that Evelyn had fled.

Margaret heard.

Panicked.

Confronted Bianca.

Bianca said:

“If you open that door now, everyone will know you helped hide her.”

True.

Then:

“Raffaele will never forgive you.”

Probably also true in that moment.

Margaret became afraid.

Bianca offered a solution.

Keep Evelyn quiet for one more night.

They would move her safely in the morning and explain privately.

Morning never came.

Instead Bianca slowly built a system.

Food delivered through the old pantry shaft.

Clothes.

Water.

Books occasionally.

No phone.

No windows except one grated vent facing a service courtyard nobody used.

Evelyn was not chained.

The outer doors simply opened only from hallways controlled by Bianca and Margaret.

Could she have screamed?

Yes.

She did.

For weeks.

But the service level sat beneath thick stone.

Music rooms above.

Laundry equipment nearby.

Nobody heard.

Except apparently Ethan sometimes.

That devastated Margaret.

“He heard her?”

“Yes.”

She covered her face.

Bianca told everyone the child was grieving.

So when Ethan said:

“Evie downstairs,”

people comforted him.

No one investigated.

Truth emerged from a toddler and was reclassified as sadness.

Then Margaret told me something else.

“Evelyn almost escaped in December.”

My eyes narrowed.

“How?”

A delivery door was accidentally left open.

She reached the main basement.

Then saw Ethan through the glass corridor.

He saw her too.

That was the memory.

Not a dream.

He ran toward her.

Before they reached each other, Bianca appeared.

And told Evelyn one sentence that sent her back underground willingly.

“What?”

May you like

Margaret whispered:

“She said if Evelyn came upstairs, Ethan would lose you.”
