Chapter 14

Bianca began therapy with no expectation that I would care.
Good.
She moved into a smaller family property.
Ran nothing.
Controlled no staff beyond two employees with clear authority lines.
At first she hated it.
Then apparently learned to cook.
Badly.
Ethan asked about her often.
After one year, Evelyn and I agreed to a supervised meeting.
Not because Bianca earned it.
Because Ethan wanted it.
He was four.
He saw her in a public garden.
Ran toward her.
Then stopped halfway.
Memory.
Bianca did not move.
Good.
He looked back at me.
I nodded.
He continued.
She crouched.
“Hi, baby.”
He frowned.
“I not baby.”
Excellent.
She laughed through tears.
Then he asked:
“Why Evie floor?”
No warm-up.
Children are efficient.
Bianca froze.
I did not rescue her.
She answered:
“Because I was selfish and scared, and I did something very wrong.”
Ethan considered.
“Floor bad.”
“Yes.”
“You do again?”
“No.”
He looked at Evelyn.
She stood several feet away.
Then:
“Okay.”
That was all.
He did not forgive eleven months.
He was four.
He established future safety.
Adults could learn from that.
Bianca did not touch him until he initiated.
Eventually he showed her a toy car.
Ten-minute conversation.
Then he wanted ice cream.
Meeting over.
Bianca cried afterward.
Away from him.
May you like
Good.
Consequences should not become a child’s emotional job.
