Chapter 5

I asked Evelyn about December.

She did not want to answer immediately.

We waited.

Then she explained.

Bianca had spent months building a new story around me.

According to her, after Evelyn vanished, I became convinced she had planned to take Ethan.

I supposedly told family that if she ever returned, I would send Ethan abroad before allowing her near him.

False.

But Evelyn had no access to me.

Only Bianca.

Margaret.

Occasional sounds through floors.

Then in December she saw Ethan.

And me.

I was twenty feet behind him in the corridor.

Talking to a bodyguard.

Evelyn almost called my name.

Bianca stepped between.

Whispered:

“Raffaele finally trusts Ethan again.”

Then:

“Come out now and he’ll think you came back for the boy.”

Poison tailored perfectly.

Evelyn froze.

Bianca continued.

“You disappear alone, he hates you.”

“You appear near Ethan, he fears you.”

“Which one hurts the child less?”

Evelyn retreated.

Not because she believed Bianca completely.

Because uncertainty plus love does terrible things.

She thought:

What if?

What if Raffaele really believed I was dangerous?

What if I emerge suddenly and men grab me in front of Ethan?

What if he screams?

What if Raffaele moves him afterward?

So she went back below.

I stood.

Walked to the window.

Not because of anger at her.

At myself.

I had built a house where the person I loved could plausibly believe she might be seized before reaching me.

That reputation protected my family from outsiders.

Inside, Bianca weaponized it.

Evelyn whispered:

“You look angry.”

“I am.”

“At me?”

“No.”

She stared.

Then:

“I hated you sometimes.”

Fair.

“I know.”

“I thought you believed her.”

“I didn’t know there was anything to believe.”

Tears filled her eyes.

That distinction hurt both of us.

Then Ethan appeared in the doorway.

Anna behind him.

He held the wooden E.

Evelyn looked at me.

Permission?

Not mine to give alone.

I looked at her.

She nodded.

Ethan walked in.

Climbed onto the edge of the bed.

Held out the block.

“You lost.”

Evelyn cried.

“Yes.”

He put it in her hand.

Then:

“I keep F.”

She laughed.

A sound I had not heard in eleven months.

Something in the room shifted.

May you like

Not healed.

Just alive.
