Chapter 10

The major twist came from Grant’s watch business.

For weeks everyone assumed he stole from Noah’s trust because the business failed.

That was only partly true.

The forensic team reconstructed the timeline.

Grant’s company did not begin failing until after the first trust withdrawals.

Before that, it had been profitable.

So why take the money?

The answer sat inside private purchase records.

Grant had been buying high-end inventory through a shell distributor.

The distributor was controlled by Evelyn.

Not to hide losses.

To hide ownership.

Grant wanted to build a luxury watch company entirely outside Massimo’s influence.

He believed Caradonna connections made every success look borrowed.

Evelyn financed the expansion secretly using Noah’s trust because conventional lenders wanted personal guarantees Grant could not support.

The first withdrawals were not emergency theft after failure.

They were startup capital.

The business grew.

Grant repaid some money.

That convinced both of them the scheme worked.

Then he expanded too aggressively.

The market turned.

Debt multiplied.

Only then did the theft accelerate.

Three earlier clues changed meaning.

Evelyn’s access to the trust had not begun as a rescue after Grant collapsed. She helped create the hidden business from the start.

Grant’s resentment before family events was not simply embarrassment about failure. He was furious that his secret “independent” success still depended on money belonging to Isabella’s son.

And the documentation portraying Isabella as unstable began when Grant realized divorce could expose the original source of his business capital.

The physical abuse escalated after Isabella started asking where the money came from.

She had not discovered the trust theft yet.

She had discovered inconsistencies in Grant’s supposed success.

He needed her confused.

Ashamed.

Afraid.

Then dependent on his version of reality.

Massimo sat across from Rachel after the forensic team finished.

“So he used Noah’s money to prove he didn’t need me.”

“Yes.”

The absurdity nearly made him laugh.

Instead he felt tired.

“And Evelyn?”

“She believed she was helping her son build something of his own.”

Massimo looked toward the window.

All the secrecy had been organized around pride.

Not survival.

Not hunger.

Pride.

Then Rachel placed one more file in front of him.

The unsent postnuptial agreement contained a clause assigning responsibility for disputed trust transactions to Isabella if the marriage ended.

Massimo stared at it.

May you like

Grant had not merely prepared to leave.

He had prepared to leave Isabella holding the financial blame.
