Chapter 12

The confrontation happened at Rachel’s office.

Isabella requested it.

Grant came with counsel.

Evelyn came separately.

Massimo sat behind his daughter rather than beside her.

That had been her choice.

Grant noticed.

“You need your father here?”

Isabella answered before Massimo could.

“No. I wanted him to hear me.”

Grant looked toward Evelyn.

His mother avoided his eyes.

Isabella began with the trust.

“You took money belonging to Noah.”

Grant leaned back.

“We invested family money into something that would benefit him eventually.”

“No.”

Her voice stayed even.

“You invested Noah’s money into something that made you feel important.”

Grant’s face tightened.

“You don’t understand what it’s like being married into your family.”

“You’re right.”

She looked at him.

“I understand what it’s like being married to you.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“This isn’t productive.”

Isabella turned.

“You taught me to cover bruises.”

“I told you to keep private matters private.”

“You pulled my sleeve down in front of my son.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I panicked.”

“So did I for three years.”

That silenced her.

Grant shifted toward anger.

“You act like you were terrified every day. You fought back.”

“Yes.”

“You hit me.”

“Yes.”

“You screamed.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened to take Noah.”

“Yes.”

Grant seemed almost relieved.

“Exactly.”

Isabella stared at him.

“You think that makes what you did disappear?”

He stopped.

“I’m not asking anyone to believe I behaved perfectly.”

She touched the edge of the table.

“I’m asking you to stop using my worst moments as permission for yours.”

Grant looked away.

Massimo felt something loosen inside him.

She no longer needed him to speak for her.

Isabella asked the final question herself.

“Why did you hide the bruises?”

Grant’s jaw moved.

No answer.

“Not why did you hurt me. Why hide it?”

He glanced at Massimo.

That was enough.

Isabella nodded.

“Because you knew if people saw what you were doing, your version of our marriage wouldn’t survive.”

Grant finally spoke.

“I was trying to keep my family.”

“No.”

Isabella’s voice softened.

May you like

“You were trying to keep control of it.”

Nothing Grant said afterward changed that.
