Chapter 6

Evelyn admitted she knew about one incident.

The broken lamp.

She arrived afterward.

Isabella had a bruise on her shoulder.

Grant said Isabella tried to leave during an argument and he stopped her.

Evelyn told him never to do it again.

Then she told Isabella marriage required patience.

“That was your solution?” Massimo asked.

Evelyn looked exhausted.

“I thought if the financial pressure eased, he would calm down.”

So she used Noah’s trust.

Not because she wanted jewelry or vacations.

Because she believed money could remove the stress making her son violent.

The explanation disgusted Isabella.

“You paid him to keep hurting me more comfortably.”

Evelyn flinched.

“That isn’t fair.”

“No.”

Isabella’s voice shook.

“Fair would’ve been you helping me leave.”

The relationship between them broke there.

Not loudly.

Evelyn simply stopped trying to defend herself.

Massimo faced his own uncomfortable truth that evening.

Isabella asked him to leave the room during a call with her attorney.

He hesitated.

Then left.

Ten minutes later, he realized why that mattered.

He had spent her entire life thinking protection meant being present for every difficult moment.

Now she needed privacy from him too.

At the trust office, the forensic team found that some withdrawals were repaid.

Grant had returned nearly $70,000 during a profitable month.

Then withdrawals resumed when his investment failed again.

That repayment would become part of his defense.

He would claim the trust money was informal family borrowing.

Rachel was unimpressed.

“A repayment doesn’t make unauthorized access authorized.”

Still, the evidence had to be precise.

The more serious problem came from Isabella’s own signature.

One $25,000 distribution was unquestionably hers.

She looked at it for a long time.

“I remember.”

Massimo waited.

Grant had told her Noah’s future preschool required a deposit.

She signed without checking.

The money went elsewhere.

“I approved it.”

Rachel nodded.

“Based on a false representation, if we can prove that.”

Isabella shook her head.

“I should’ve checked.”

Massimo began to say something comforting.

She stopped him.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“I need to own the part that’s mine.”

That sentence changed something in him.

For years Massimo had believed family loyalty meant reducing consequences for the people he loved.

Isabella was asking for the opposite.
