Chapter 2

Massimo took Isabella and Noah to his townhouse on the Upper East Side.

Not the Caradonna club.

Not a family hotel.

A quiet house where Noah could sleep without strangers coming through the doors.

A doctor examined Isabella that night.

The bruising around her wrists was recent.

There were older marks along her upper arm and ribs.

No fractures.

No immediate hospitalization.

The doctor asked Isabella whether she felt safe going home.

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

Massimo looked away.

He had spent his life reading hesitation in men twice her age.

He had somehow missed fear in his own daughter.

Later, after Noah fell asleep in a guest room, Isabella sat across from Massimo in the kitchen.

No jewelry.

No heels.

A sweatshirt borrowed from one of the staff.

She looked younger than thirty-one.

“How long?”

She stared at her hands.

“Which part?”

Massimo’s face tightened.

“That long?”

She nodded.

The first incident happened sixteen months earlier.

Grant shoved her during an argument about money.

He apologized.

Then he explained why she had made him angry.

The second time, he grabbed her wrist.

The third time, he broke a lamp beside her and called it restraint because he had not hit her.

Evelyn became involved gradually.

“She’d come over after.”

“For what?”

“To explain him.”

Massimo stared at her.

“Explain what?”

“That he was under pressure. That marriage was hard. That powerful men had tempers.”

Isabella looked directly at her father.

“She said you would understand.”

That hurt more than Massimo expected.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she was right about one thing.”

“What?”

“You would’ve done exactly what you did tonight.”

Massimo said nothing.

“You would’ve hurt him.”

“He hurt you.”

“And then what?”

Her voice sharpened.

“You go to jail? Grant’s people retaliate? Noah watches more men fight over him?”

Massimo leaned back.

For once, anger had no useful direction.

Isabella touched the clinic card.

“I went there three weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“They help women make safety plans.”

Massimo looked at her.

“You’ve been planning this for three weeks?”

“Longer.”

“Then why tonight?”

Isabella swallowed.

“Because Grant found out I moved money.”

Massimo’s attention sharpened.

“What money?”

“My money.”

She looked toward the sleeping part of the house.

“I opened an account he couldn’t access.”

Massimo thought the abuse was the central secret.

Then Isabella added:

“He thinks I found out what he’s been doing with Noah’s trust.”
