Chapter 4

Massimo made the decision Grant expected least.
He stepped away from direct control of the trust investigation.
Rachel appointed independent forensic accountants.
Every questionable distribution would be reviewed without Massimo supervising the outcome.
“Why?” Isabella asked.
“Because if I control it, Grant will say I manufactured it.”
She studied him.
“You’re learning.”
“Don’t enjoy it.”
A faint smile appeared.
It disappeared quickly.
The practical consequences began immediately.
Grant’s access to several Caradonna businesses was suspended.
Not terminated.
Suspended pending review.
Evelyn called Massimo before lunch.
“You are ruining my son over bruises Isabella probably gave herself during one of her episodes.”
Massimo went quiet.
Evelyn continued.
“She needs help.”
“She found help.”
“What?”
“A clinic.”
Silence.
Massimo heard the first break in Evelyn’s confidence.
“You knew.”
“I knew what?”
“She was planning to leave.”
Evelyn recovered quickly.
“Don’t be ridiculous.”
Massimo hung up.
That evening, Isabella’s attorney helped her petition for temporary protective measures and establish communication boundaries.
No instant divorce.
No instant custody decision.
Paperwork.
Statements.
Schedules.
Noah remained with Isabella at Massimo’s townhouse under a temporary arrangement while the adults worked through the process.
Grant requested contact with Noah.
Isabella froze when Rachel told her.
Massimo wanted to refuse.
Rachel stopped him.
“You are the grandfather.”
“He terrorized my daughter.”
“And parenting decisions still go through the proper process.”
Massimo hated that sentence.
He respected it.
A supervised video call was arranged.
Noah looked at Grant on the screen.
“Daddy?”
Grant smiled.
“Hey, buddy.”
Noah leaned against Isabella.
“Are you mad?”
Grant’s face changed.
“No.”
“Mommy said no yelling.”
Grant swallowed.
“No yelling.”
For five minutes, he behaved perfectly.
That disturbed Isabella more than rage would have.
Afterward she said, “This is why nobody believed me.”
Massimo understood.
Abusive people did not remain visibly abusive every hour.
That was part of how the system survived.
The forensic accountants called later.
They had found something unexpected.
Some suspicious trust payments began before Grant ever received Isabella’s phone passcode.

Which meant either Isabella approved them herself—
or somebody else had access.
