Chapter 9

The jewelry-house incident spread beyond family gossip.
Several collectors and business partners had witnessed Grant attack Massimo.
They had also seen Noah reveal Isabella’s bruises.
Rumors reached Caradonna businesses.
Grant’s role in several family ventures became untenable.
Massimo recused himself from employment decisions involving Grant.
The board placed Grant on leave.
Some associates considered that weakness.
Massimo no longer cared.
The jewelry house faced its own embarrassment because the incident occurred during a private preview.
The owners offered to suppress staff statements.
Massimo refused.
“If they saw something, they say what they saw.”
That surprised Isabella.
“You would’ve buried this five years ago.”
“Yes.”
“What changed?”
Massimo looked at Noah building towers from empty velvet boxes.
“You.”
The external consequences widened.
Grant’s lenders began demanding information about the watch business.
A bank froze certain disputed transfers while ownership was examined.
Evelyn’s personal finances entered the review because trust money had passed through her account.
She called Isabella.
It was the first time since the meeting.
Isabella answered on speaker with her attorney present.
“I’m sorry.”
Isabella did not respond.
Evelyn continued.
“I thought I could keep the family together.”
“You kept Grant comfortable.”
“I kept trying to buy him time.”
“With Noah’s money.”
“Yes.”
“With my body.”
Evelyn’s breath caught.
“I never wanted him to hurt you.”
“You just wanted me to hide it.”
Silence.
Isabella ended the call.
Afterward she cried for the first time in front of Massimo.
He moved toward her.
Then stopped.
“Can I?”
She nodded.
He held her.
No speeches.
No promise that everything would be fixed.
That night Noah asked why Daddy lived somewhere else.
Isabella answered simply.
“Because Daddy made choices that weren’t safe.”
“Is Daddy bad?”
She looked toward Massimo.
He did not answer for her.
“No,” Isabella said slowly. “Daddy did bad things.”
Noah thought about it.
“Can people stop?”
Isabella swallowed.
“Sometimes.”
The question stayed with Massimo.

Because the investigation was beginning to show that Grant’s worst choices had not started with violence.
They started much earlier, with a need to prove he was never dependent on the Caradonnas.
