Chapter 9 - THE SIGNATURE PAGE
The criminal case turned on intent.
Aggravated assault.
Attempted assault with a dangerous instrument.
Unlawful restraint for locking the door.
Potential coercion related to the contract.
Prosecutors needed facts, not family interpretation.
Then they found the signature pages.
In Preston’s suit bag.
Not in the bridal suite initially because police had focused on the club and room.
Later inventory of his belongings revealed a slim folder.
Inside:
Final signature pages for the Alignment Agreement.
Tabs placed.
My signature lines highlighted.
Notary block.
A mobile notary had been booked to arrive at the bridal suite at 10:55.
I had never been told.
The notary confirmed Warren’s assistant scheduled her.
Purpose:
Wedding documents.
She assumed prenup addenda or estate paperwork.
She never entered because hotel security locked down the floor after police were called.
Then Preston’s messages to Warren.
10:28 A.M.
PRESTON:
G says she is not signing before board review.
WARREN:
Then there is no point waiting until after vows.
PRESTON:
She’ll sign.
WARREN:
How?
PRESTON:
She needs to understand marriage isn’t negotiation every morning.
That sentence chilled me.
Then:
WARREN:
Do not make a scene.
PRESTON:
I won’t.
Warren’s defense later emphasized that line.
He told Preston not to make a scene.
True.
Then Preston texted his best man:
Need ten minutes alone with her. After today this stops.
What stops?
My resistance?
Our arguments?
Negotiation?
Then one deleted draft recovered from his phone:
You are not walking downstairs until you understand what you are signing.
There.
Not sent.
Still evidence of thought.
Then bridal-suite audio.
I had said:
“I’m not signing a voting agreement without my board counsel reviewing it.”
Preston:
“Evelyn works for you.”
“She works for the company and family entities where engaged.”
“Same thing.”
“No.”
Then:
“My father already put this in front of lenders.”
“That was irresponsible.”
“You’re calling him a liar?”
“If he said I agreed, yes.”
Then movement.
Door lock.
The club.
His line about Warren and Margaret.
My ring on the vanity.
Then the swing.
The prosecutor called Evelyn.
“Could Giulietta have validly signed immediately after this confrontation?”
Evelyn answered:
“A signature obtained through coercion would be vulnerable and potentially unenforceable. I would have advised her not to sign under those circumstances.”
Obvious.
So why intimidate me?
Because Preston was not behaving like a lawyer.
He was behaving like a man raised to believe fear creates agreement.
Then the final clue before the full reveal.
Warren’s private email to Preston two days earlier:
Giulietta must understand that once you marry, divided loyalties end. She cannot be Marconi first every time.

The Hales did not only need a contract.
