Chapter 12 - The Carter trust

Money played a role.

Not the entire role.

My grandfather created the Carter Descendant Trust in 1998.

By the time Vincent died, it held approximately $9.4 million in legitimate investment assets after taxes and prior distributions.

Purpose:

Education.

Medical care.

Security expenses.

Certain housing support.

For Vincent’s biological grandchildren and later descendants.

Ethan was a beneficiary.

If Eliza was mine, she would be too.

Would Ethan lose half his inheritance?

No.

Not that simple.

The trust used discretionary distributions.

Adding another beneficiary increased obligations.

Future remainder shares might change.

But neither child was becoming impoverished.

Claire had once told Hannah:

“Formal recognition could change Ethan’s trust position.”

Technically true.

Emotionally revealing.

When I asked:

“Were you hiding Eliza to protect Ethan’s money?”

Claire said:

“Not exactly.”

“What does exactly mean?”

“I thought about it.”

There.

“How much?”

“At first? A lot.”

She looked ashamed.

“Your father had already structured everything around Ethan as the only grandchild in your line.”

“His preference doesn’t matter.”

“I know.”

“Did you?”

“Eventually.”

Claire claimed money became less important after meeting Eliza.

I believed that partly.

The payments she made to Hannah came from her own separate inherited account.

Nearly $48,000 over twenty months.

If she wanted Eliza erased purely for money, paying support herself was strange.

The deeper issue was family succession.

A recognized second child.

A daughter.

Another branch.

Another person journalists could identify.

Another potential target.

Another challenge to the Carter myth that Ethan was the sole heir.

Claire had internalized the family system more than she admitted.

She was afraid of what Eliza would change.

Then she became responsible for hiding the child in the name of protecting everyone.

Exactly like Vincent.
