Chapter 13 - Leonard’s files

Leonard Shaw did not destroy the files.
Good.
He also did not voluntarily give me everything.
Better.
Courts and bar counsel handled access.
His records showed Vincent’s involvement clearly.
Meeting notes.
Trust transfers.
Security memos.
One line made me physically ill.
V.C. directive: Ryan is not to be informed until threat environment improves and succession plan is stabilized.
My father had decided whether I could know my own child based on:
Threat environment.
Succession.
Not love.
Not rights.
Control.
Another note:
H.V. understands direct contact with Ryan may create risk to child and her family.
Was that a threat?
Hannah apparently believed it could be.
Leonard said it was:
“a security warning.”
Language again.
What does warning mean when spoken by people everyone fears?
Hannah accepted an apartment relocation funded through Vincent’s trust for one year.
No evidence anyone forced her physically.
No evidence of violence.
No evidence she was followed continuously.
Still, the asymmetry was enormous.
A young single mother.
The Carter family.
Money.
Lawyers.
Security.
Fear can create compliance without a gun.
That became part of the civil case against Vincent’s estate.
Not my criminal case.
He was dead.
Leonard faced professional discipline for conflicts and for making statements that arguably implied he represented my wishes when he did not.
He eventually lost his role as trustee.
Bar proceedings resulted in a suspension rather than disbarment after contested hearings and cooperation.
No prison.
No basement interrogation.
Paper consequences.
May you like
He hated them.
Good.
