Chapter 5 - Claire found out

Claire learned about Eliza twenty-two months before I did.
That sentence ended our marriage long before I filed paperwork.
After Vincent died, his estate administration exposed recurring payments from the Carter Family Protection Trust to:
H. Vale.
Claire managed the family foundation.
She did not manage Vincent’s private trust.
But a duplicate statement was mistakenly included in a box of foundation records transferred from his office.
She saw:
$3,500 monthly.
Tuition reimbursement.
Pediatric bills.
Legal fees to Leonard Shaw.
She asked Leonard.
He told her:
“It is a matter Ryan chose not to reopen.”
Claire believed him for two days.
Then she found Hannah herself.
Why not ask me?
That question would define us.
Claire said later:
“I was terrified of the answer.”
She met Hannah at a coffee shop.
No bodyguards.
No family lawyer.
Hannah brought Eliza.
Four years old then.
Claire saw her.
Brown hair.
My eyes.
Same dimple Ethan had on one side when he smiled.
Hannah told Claire everything Vincent had said.
Claire knew immediately something was wrong.
Because she knew me.
Whatever else I was, I would not knowingly pay for a daughter for years while refusing even to meet her.
Claire asked Leonard:
“Did Ryan actually authorize this?”
Leonard refused to answer directly.
That should have been the moment Claire came home.
It was not.
She hired a private attorney.
Reviewed records.
Confirmed Vincent arranged the support.
Then she told herself she needed certainty.
DNA.
Hannah refused.
“Ryan can ask me himself.”
Claire said she could not tell me until she understood what Vincent had done.
Then weeks became months.
Hannah grew angry.
Claire increased the monthly support from her own separate funds after Vincent’s trust administrator paused payments during estate review.
Two thousand five hundred dollars per month.
No written agreement at first.
Then a simple support arrangement through counsel.
Why?
Part guilt.
Part fear.
Part control.

Claire had become the new gatekeeper.
The exact thing she would later tell herself she hated about Vincent.
