Chapter 7 - Ethan’s promise

Ethan did not understand paternity.
He understood secrecy.
Claire told him:
“Eliza’s family situation is complicated.”
“Is Dad her dad?”
“No.”
“Then why she says?”
“Her mom told her something confusing.”
Eliza shouted from the table:
“My mom didn’t lie.”
Claire tried to change the subject.
That was the wrong move with two children.
By lunch, Ethan had decided Claire was lying.
He asked Eliza:
“Do you have a picture?”
Eliza showed him one from her backpack.
Me.
At thirty-one.
Standing beside Hannah on the Annapolis waterfront.
Ethan stared.
“That’s Dad.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
“He’s my dad.”
Children accept unsettling facts with terrifying speed.
At 2:31 p.m., I texted Claire:
Meeting ended. Leaving Washington. Home around 4.
Her phone records later showed what happened next.
2:32.
Call Megan.
No answer.
2:34.
Again.
2:38.
Leonard Shaw.
Duration nine minutes.
2:49.
Her personal attorney.
2:58.
Megan again.
No answer.
At 3:01, Claire told Eliza:
“Your dad is coming sooner than expected.”
Eliza became excited.
Claire became more frightened.
Why not simply let us meet?
Because Claire had spent twenty-two months imagining my reaction.
I would learn my father had hidden my daughter.
I would learn Claire discovered that.
I would learn she continued it.
I would learn Hannah died before I could confront her.
All in one moment.
Claire wanted:
One hour.
Lawyers present.
Security briefed.
A plan for Ethan.
A plan for Eliza.
A plan for me.
Control.
So she created one more lie.
She told Eliza:
“We’re going to play hide-and-seek for a little bit before Ryan arrives.”
The maintenance compartment behind the pantry was the only place she believed I would not immediately see from the kitchen entrance.
Eliza went inside reluctantly.
Claire gave her:
Water.
Juice.
Crackers.
A blanket.
Then Eliza tried to come out.
“I don’t want game.”
Claire told her:
“Just a little longer.”
Eliza pushed the panel.
Claire locked it.
That changed everything.
Panic became confinement.
Ethan saw.
“Mom!”
Claire said:
“It’s only until Dad gets home.”
“Let her out.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to talk to Dad first.”
“You said don’t tell.”
“Ethan.”
He started crying.
Claire made him promise.
No telling until she explained.
Twenty minutes later, Eliza began asking for food.
May you like
Ethan took bread.
Then I walked into the kitchen.
