Chapter 17 - My father’s men

Three former Carter security employees knew something.
Not Eliza’s daily life.
The original arrangement.
One was Daniel Reese.
Retired.
Sixty-three.
He had driven Vincent to meet Hannah once.
Another, Paul Mercer, arranged the temporary apartment.
A third delivered documents to Leonard.
All said Vincent instructed them:
Ryan is not to know.
Why did none tell me after Vincent died?
Daniel answered:
“Because your father told us.”
“He was dead.”
“You know how that sounds to you.”
“Explain.”
“Vincent’s orders did not stop feeling like orders because a funeral happened.”
There.
Family systems outlive people.
I could have screamed.
Instead:
“Did anyone threaten Hannah?”
“No.”
“Did anyone follow her?”
“For security.”
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“We watched the apartment for a while.”
“Did she ask?”
“No.”
There.
Again.
The Carter family called surveillance protection when we were the ones choosing it.
No one had kidnapped Hannah.
No one struck her.
No one took Eliza.
But the imbalance of power shaped every decision around them.
I had not ordered it.
I still inherited the consequences.
That became the civil truth.

The main criminal case remained Claire’s fifty-three minutes.
The family history became something larger.
