Chapter 26 - The Carter table

Three years after the vent, the remaining family leadership gathered for Thanksgiving at my house.
Not gang captains.
Family.
Aunt Celia.
Two cousins.
Ethan.
Eliza.
Megan.
My sister-in-law Brooke brought Claire later for Ethan’s dessert hour under our co-parenting plan.
That arrangement would have been unimaginable three years earlier.
Claire did not stay all evening.
She arrived at seven.
Saw Eliza.
Stopped.
Eliza looked at her.
No therapist choreography.
No dramatic hug.
Claire said:
“Hi, Eliza.”
Eliza:
“Hi.”
Then Ethan dragged Claire toward a model he had built.
Life moved.
At dinner, one older cousin made a joke.
“Well, Vincent always did like surprises.”
I put my fork down.
Not violently.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
Three years earlier, I might have humiliated him.
Now:
“That isn’t a joke we make around the children.”
Specific.
He nodded.
“Sorry.”
Done.
Eliza ate mashed potatoes.
Ethan stole a roll.
Megan argued with Aaron about football.
No hierarchy.
No child treated as a threat to succession.
No family elder deciding who was allowed to exist.
Later Eliza climbed onto the kitchen stool.
Same kitchen.
Same vent location.
The metal grate had been removed during renovation.
The maintenance channel remained accessible from the pantry through a normal unlocked service panel used only by contractors.
No hidden compartment.
No lock.
Eliza pointed.
“That was there.”
“Yes.”
“Can it close?”
“The service door can close.”
“Lock?”
“Not from outside.”
She looked at me.
May you like
“Good.”
That was all.
