Chapter 1

The dining room doors closed.

Alex did not look at Grant.

Not yet.

He carried Rosie into the quiet end of the room and lowered himself onto one knee.

Her little fingers were bright red across the palms.

When he reached toward them, Rosie instinctively pulled them against her chest.

Alex stopped immediately.

His eyes softened.

“Daddy won’t touch.”

Rosie’s lower lip shook.

Maya stood behind him.

Her own bandaged hands remained hidden against her dress.

Alex slowly looked up.

“How long?”

Maya’s eyes moved toward Evelyn.

The older woman sat perfectly straight at the birthday table.

No apology.

No fear.

Only irritation that the celebration had stopped.

Evelyn lifted her chin.

“They were asked to help.”

Alex’s gaze moved back to Maya.

“That wasn't my question.”

Silence.

Maya took one shallow breath.

“Since yesterday morning.”

Alex became completely still.

Rosie had spent almost two days carrying plates, wiping tables, sorting linens, and helping kitchen staff while the rest of the family prepared for her own birthday reception.

When she became tired, Evelyn told her good girls finished their work.

When she asked for food, she was told everyone else ate first.

Maya tried to stop it.

That was when the punishment shifted to her.

Alex looked toward the steaming pot.

Maya saw where his eyes went.

Her breathing changed.

“The burns weren’t from dishwater.”

Grant pushed himself partly upright beneath the tilted catering rack.

“Maya.”

His voice was warning enough.

Alex turned his head.

Grant stopped.

Maya swallowed.

“Yesterday afternoon Evelyn told me to carry that pot to the serving station.”

Alex looked at the size of it.

Heavy.

Industrial.

Maya continued.

“I said my hands couldn't hold it safely.”

Her fingers twitched beneath the bandages.

“Grant locked the kitchen door.”

Alex’s eyes moved toward his cousin.

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Maya’s voice became smaller.

“They took the cloths off the handles.”

Evelyn finally shifted in her chair.

“It was hot, not boiling.”

Alex looked at his mother.

The room seemed to lose air.

Rosie whispered:

“Mommy cried.”

Alex’s thumb stopped moving across his signet ring.

Maya continued.

She had tried to put the pot down.

Grant pushed it back toward her.

Evelyn told her she could leave the kitchen once she apologized.

“For what?”

Alex asked.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

Then Grant.

“For accusing Grant of stealing from the family.”

Grant laughed once.

Too quickly.

“There it is.”

Alex’s eyes narrowed.

Grant straightened despite the pain in his shoulder.

“This whole thing is because your wife thinks every invoice she doesn't recognize is theft.”

Maya’s bandaged hands curled.

Alex heard the shift in her breathing.

“You found something?”

She nodded.

Rosie’s birthday catering had been billed through a Vance hospitality company.

Maya had helped select the menu.

The original event budget was forty-two thousand dollars.

The final internal invoice was one hundred and eighty-six thousand.

Alex’s face changed.

Grant’s did too.

Maya looked at her husband.

“That wasn't the first one.”

She had checked earlier family events.

Same vendors.

Same inflated charges.

Same authorization initials.

G.V.

Grant Vance.

The birthday humiliation had not begun because Maya refused to serve.

It began after she discovered someone had been using family celebrations to move money.

And before Alex could ask another question, Maya added quietly:

“I copied everything.”

Grant’s eyes snapped toward her.

Alex saw it.

Then Maya looked toward the kitchen.

“The copies were in my handbag.”

May you like

A pause.

“Someone took them before you came home.”
