Chapter 5

Grant laughed.
This time it sounded forced.
“My father has been dead twelve years.”
Alex looked at him.
“Companies survive people.”
“You think a dead man is stealing birthday money?”
“No.”
Alex leaned back.
“I think someone likes his system.”
Grant’s jaw moved.
Evelyn interrupted.
“Raymond made mistakes.”
Maya looked at her.
“Mistakes?”
Her voice was quiet.
That quiet frightened Evelyn more than shouting.
“My father died branded a thief.”
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“And Raymond died with his own shame.”
“But privately.”
Maya’s bandaged hand rested over the old file.
“My father got the public part.”
Evelyn had no answer.
Alex ordered a full review of Raymond’s holding company.
Grant objected.
“You're opening twenty years of family records over one birthday invoice?”
Alex looked at Rosie asleep against Maya’s shoulder.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“I’m opening it because my daughter’s hands look like that.”
Grant looked away first.
The review produced one immediate connection.
Raymond’s old company had been dormant for years.
Then reactivated two years ago.
Authorized officer:
Grant Vance.
Evelyn’s face changed.
She turned toward him.
“You told me you closed it.”
Grant exhaled.
“It holds family investments.”
“You told me there was nothing in Raymond’s name anymore.”
“Mom—”
“Don't.”
The word came sharper than anyone expected.
Grant froze.
Evelyn had protected him automatically all night.
That reflex had finally cracked.
Grant recovered.
“It was easier to keep the structure than create new entities.”
Alex asked:
“And Northstar?”
“No idea.”
“Peter Lang?”
“No idea.”
Maya stared at him.
Grant felt it.
“What?”
She slowly lifted her phone.
“I remember him.”
Grant’s face tightened.
Maya had attended a charity dinner six months earlier.
Peter Lang was there.
Not as a former driver.
Grant introduced him as a procurement consultant.
Maya had taken photographs of the event.
One showed Grant and Lang beside Evelyn.
Another showed Grant passing him an envelope.
Grant shrugged.
“So?”
Maya zoomed in.
Printed across the envelope:
NORTHSTAR.
Silence.
Grant's confidence faltered.
Then Alex’s attorney arrived with another old document recovered from Anthony Vance’s archive.
A letter addressed to Alex.
Never delivered.
Dated nineteen years earlier.
Evelyn saw the handwriting.
Her face emptied.
Alex opened it.
The first sentence read:
If Daniel Reyes is still carrying Raymond’s blame when you read this, your mother chose silence over my instructions.
Alex slowly lifted his eyes.
May you like
The old betrayal no longer belonged only to Grant’s father.
His own mother had actively kept the truth buried.
