Chapter 13

The council reconvened three days later.

This time Grant had no hidden camera.

No staged audience.

No mother beside him.

He still walked in confidently.

That was who he was.

Pride remained after leverage disappeared.

Alex sat at the head of the table.

Maya sat beside counsel, not beside Alex.

That distinction was deliberate.

Her evidence belonged to her.

Not to her husband’s protection.

The forensic report was presented.

Inflated invoices.

Northstar.

Raymond’s reactivated holding company.

Forged signatures.

Maya’s copied signature.

Evelyn’s approvals.

The drained restitution fund.

The burner phone.

The hidden birthday camera.

The instructions to keep Maya and Rosie in the kitchen until Alex arrived.

Grant’s plan had two purposes.

Move money.

And create a public incident that weakened Alex enough to delay any investigation.

Three capos had initially supported the fitness review.

One spoke first.

“I supported an investigation of Alex.”

Grant looked toward him.

The capo continued.

“I did not support this.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Another followed.

Then the third.

Grant’s coalition disappeared one man at a time.

He looked at Alex.

“You think they're loyal now?”

Alex shook his head.

“No.”

Grant frowned.

“I think they were never supposed to be loyal to me personally.”

That answer changed the room.

Alex had begun to understand the same lesson his father failed to finish.

Systems mattered precisely because loyalty changed.

Grant's face hardened.

“You're becoming weak.”

Alex looked at Maya’s hands.

Then at the photograph of Rosie’s red palms included in the evidence packet.

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“I’m becoming harder to use.”

Grant’s breathing changed.

The council voted to remove him from every Vance-controlled operational role.

His access ended immediately.

Financial accounts tied to family companies were frozen pending independent investigation.

Evidence concerning fraud, coercion, assault, and document manipulation moved outside the family.

Grant looked toward Evelyn.

She did not meet his eyes.

Then toward Maya.

She did.

No fear.

That seemed to hurt him more.

Finally he looked at Alex.

“What now?”

Alex’s hands remained flat on the table.

“You answer to people I don't control.”

Grant’s expression shifted.

For a man raised inside family protection, that was the punishment he feared most.

But before the guards escorted him out, Grant stopped.

He looked toward Evelyn.

“Tell him what you did after Anthony died.”

Her face went white.

Alex saw it.

“Mom?”

Grant smiled.

One last weapon.

“She didn't only bury Daniel’s truth.”

Evelyn’s hands started shaking.

“She changed Anthony’s final succession letter.”

May you like

The room went silent.

Even stripped of power, Grant had found one more secret capable of breaking the family open.
