Chapter 9

The council convened at ten.

Grant entered with a bruised face and his arm supported.

Presentation mattered.

Alex noticed.

So did Maya.

She attended with both hands rebandaged.

Rosie stayed home with a caregiver Alex chose personally.

Evelyn arrived separately.

For once, nobody knew where she stood.

Grant spoke first.

He did not mention inflated invoices.

Or Daniel Reyes.

Or the burner phone.

He talked about Alex.

Temper.

Control.

Family violence.

Unilateral decisions.

He played the birthday recording beginning only at the moment Alex attacked him.

Maya watched the screen.

Grant had removed everything before it.

The forced service.

Rosie crying.

Maya’s bandages.

The argument.

Only Alex’s violence remained.

Several capos shifted.

Grant knew exactly how to frame a truth.

Then Alex stood.

No denial.

“I hit him.”

The room became quieter.

Grant frowned.

He expected justification.

Alex continued.

“It is on video.”

A pause.

“You can judge that separately.”

Then Maya’s copy played.

The hidden camera had also captured Grant speaking with Evelyn twenty minutes earlier.

His voice was unmistakable.

Keep them working until Alex gets here.

Evelyn:

Maya’s hands are already burned.

Grant:

Better.

The room changed.

Grant’s mouth tightened.

Then:

If he hits me, don't stop him.

One capo looked toward Grant.

Another leaned back.

Power shifted.

Grant recovered.

“You're still watching a violent leader explain why his violence was justified.”

Alex looked at him.

“No.”

His voice remained calm.

“I said judge mine separately.”

Grant’s eyes narrowed.

Alex continued.

“Now judge why you needed it.”

The invoices appeared.

Northstar.

Raymond’s company.

Old vendor patterns.

Daniel Reyes.

The capos became less comfortable.

These men remembered the name.

Some had believed Daniel guilty for twenty years.

Grant saw the danger.

So he changed direction.

He looked toward Maya.

“Ask your husband who signed your father’s permanent exclusion.”

The room went silent.

Maya’s eyes dropped.

Alex answered before anyone else could.

“I did.”

Whispers moved around the table.

Grant smiled.

“There.”

He looked at the capos.

“Alex knew exactly what family does to inconvenient people.”

Maya’s face tightened.

Grant pressed.

“Now he wants to rewrite history because his wife finally found out.”

The council shifted again.

Not toward Grant completely.

Away from certainty.

That was enough.

Then Evelyn stood.

Every voice stopped.

She carried an old cassette recorder.

Alex recognized it.

His father’s.

Evelyn’s hands shook.

“I kept one thing.”

Grant’s face changed.

She placed the recorder on the table.

“Anthony made this the week after his heart attack.”

Alex stared at her.

“You had it all this time?”

She nodded.

Grant stood.

“Mom.”

Evelyn did not look at him.

For the first time, she pressed play against his wishes.

May you like

Anthony Vance’s voice filled the council room.

And the first name he said was Raymond.
