Chapter 7

Evelyn did not deny it.

Her silence did that for her.

Alex looked at his mother.

“You intercepted it.”

Her eyes lowered.

“One message.”

Maya’s breath caught.

Alex’s voice became rougher.

“What did he say?”

“I don't remember.”

Maya stood.

Her chair scraped sharply across the floor.

“You remember.”

Evelyn looked at her.

Maya’s bandaged hands trembled at her sides.

“You remembered my father’s name twenty years later.”

A pause.

“You remember.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The message had arrived at the main estate office.

Daniel Reyes asked Alex to reconsider the exclusion.

Then he said something else.

Raymond was not acting alone.

And Evelyn knew who had helped him.

Alex’s fingers closed slowly.

“Who?”

Evelyn whispered:

“I deleted it before the rest.”

Maya’s face collapsed.

Alex stared.

“Before the rest?”

Evelyn’s breath became uneven.

“There were two messages.”

The second had survived.

Not at the estate.

Daniel had also left it with an attorney.

Maya’s father had kept a copy in case Evelyn intercepted the first.

Maya knew the attorney’s name.

She called immediately.

Retired now.

Still alive.

Within hours, an archived voicemail file arrived.

Nobody spoke as Maya played it.

Daniel’s voice.

Older.

Exhausted.

Alex had never heard him before.

Daniel said Raymond stole.

He said Anthony discovered it.

Then:

Evelyn knows Grant helped his father alter some of the vendor files.

Grant went completely still.

Alex looked toward him.

Grant had been twenty at the time.

Old enough.

Daniel continued.

The boy is young, but he knows exactly what his father is doing.

Grant’s breathing changed.

Then Daniel said:

If Alex ever sees this, tell him not to punish the son for the father. Just don't let the son learn that lies work.

The voicemail ended.

No one moved.

Maya stared at Grant.

“My father protected you.”

Grant’s mouth tightened.

“He was trying to save himself.”

“No.”

Her eyes filled.

“He told Alex not to punish you.”

Grant looked away.

That reaction mattered.

Alex watched him.

“You remembered Daniel.”

Grant said nothing.

“Didn't you?”

Still nothing.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“He did.”

Everyone turned.

Grant’s eyes snapped toward her.

Evelyn’s face had changed.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“He asked me about Daniel when he was twenty-two.”

Grant’s jaw flexed.

“Stop.”

Evelyn continued.

“He wanted to know why his father hated the name Reyes.”

Grant stood.

“Enough.”

Alex looked at him.

“You knew the truth before Maya ever entered this family.”

Grant's silence answered.

Then digital forensics called.

The burner phone messages from the birthday had been recovered fully.

One deleted line remained.

MAKE SURE ALEX SEES HER HANDS BEFORE HE SEES THE INVOICES.

The abuse had not only been punishment.

Grant wanted Alex enraged before the financial evidence appeared.
