Chapter 3

Grant denied the phone was his.

Alex did not argue.

He handed it to digital forensics.

Evelyn became impatient.

“This is absurd.”

Her voice stayed cold.

“Maya accused family of theft, caused a scene, and now suddenly mysterious phones appear in cupboards.”

Maya’s eyes hardened.

Despite the bandages, she sat straighter.

“I didn't cause Rosie’s hands.”

Evelyn looked at her.

A long silence.

Then:

“She needed discipline.”

Alex’s face changed.

Evelyn saw it.

For the first time that night, her confidence slipped.

Not because Alex threatened her.

Because he did not.

He only stared.

The silence forced everyone else to hear what she had just said.

Digital forensics produced the burner’s contact history.

One number belonged to Grant.

Another was unregistered.

The third surprised Alex.

Evelyn’s private cell.

His mother looked at the screen.

“I've never seen that phone.”

Grant immediately spoke.

“Someone is framing us.”

Maya looked toward him.

“Us?”

Grant stopped.

One word too many.

Alex noticed.

So did Evelyn.

Her fingers slowly tightened around her pearl bracelet.

For the first time, she looked at Grant rather than defending him.

The unknown number was traced to an old office inside Vance Hospitality’s Boston warehouse.

A property Grant managed.

Alex sent security.

They found no one.

But inside a locked desk drawer sat copies of event invoices.

Northstar.

Three other vendors.

Millions in total charges.

Some legitimate.

Some impossible.

And beneath them—

an old personnel file.

Maya’s face changed when Alex brought it downstairs.

The name on the cover:

DANIEL REYES.

Her late father.

Evelyn’s mouth tightened.

Grant looked away.

Alex noticed both.

Maya stared at the file.

“My father never worked for Vance Hospitality.”

“No,” Evelyn said.

Her voice had changed.

“He worked for Alex’s father.”

Maya turned.

Alex slowly opened the file.

Daniel Reyes had served as financial controller for his late father, Anthony Vance, twenty years earlier.

The file contained an internal accusation.

Missing funds.

False vendor payments.

Unexplained cash movement.

Daniel had been dismissed in disgrace.

Maya’s eyes moved across the pages.

Her breathing became shallow.

“My father told me he was framed.”

Evelyn laughed without humor.

“Of course he did.”

Alex looked at his mother.

“You knew her father?”

“Everyone knew him.”

Maya stared at Alex.

“You never told me.”

He held her gaze.

“I didn't know.”

That answer hurt more than she wanted it to.

Because she believed him.

Then Alex reached the final page.

A handwritten note from his father.

Not part of the formal file.

Dated three days before Daniel’s dismissal.

Daniel may be telling the truth.

Check Raymond before this goes further.

Alex looked up.

“Who was Raymond?”

Evelyn’s face went still.

Grant’s hand slowly closed.

Maya noticed first.

Alex followed her eyes.

Grant whispered:

“My father.”

The old theft Maya had discovered in current invoices carried the same pattern as the scandal that destroyed her father twenty years earlier.

And Anthony Vance had suspected Grant’s father before he died.
