Chapter 6

Evelyn stood.

“I won't be judged by a dead man’s unfinished letter.”

Alex’s eyes remained on the page.

“Sit.”

The single word changed the room.

She stared at him.

For most of Alex’s life, Evelyn had been the only person who could interrupt him without consequence.

Not tonight.

Her shoulders stiffened.

Then she sat.

Alex read.

Anthony had discovered enough evidence to believe Raymond redirected vendor money and used Daniel’s credentials to disguise it.

Daniel agreed to accept temporary responsibility because Raymond’s outside partners had threatened retaliation against employees and family members if exposed abruptly.

Anthony planned to move assets, separate Raymond from operations, and clear Daniel afterward.

Then the heart attack came.

During recovery, Anthony instructed Evelyn to preserve the evidence.

To clear Daniel’s name if he became unable to do it himself.

Evelyn never did.

Maya stared at her.

“Why?”

Evelyn’s eyes remained dry.

“My brother had children.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

Maya almost laughed.

“So did my father.”

Silence.

Evelyn looked toward Rosie.

Only then did the hypocrisy become visible even to her.

Maya continued.

“You protected Grant’s father because his children would suffer.”

Her voice shook.

“And you let his lie follow me into adulthood.”

Evelyn’s hands tightened.

“I repaid the money.”

Alex looked up.

“What?”

“All of it.”

After Anthony became ill, Evelyn secretly replaced the stolen funds from her own accounts.

In her mind, the financial damage was corrected.

Only reputation remained.

And reputation, she believed, was survivable.

Maya stared.

“You thought money made my father whole?”

Evelyn's breathing became shallow.

“No.”

But her silence said she once had.

Then Grant spoke.

“Enough ancient history.”

Alex turned.

Grant’s face hardened.

“You want current truth?”

He reached into his jacket.

Bodyguards moved.

Grant smiled.

“Relax.”

He pulled out a photocopy.

Placed it in front of Maya.

Alex recognized his own signature.

Daniel Reyes — permanent exclusion from Vance-controlled companies.

Signed:

Alex Vance.

Maya looked at him.

The room shifted.

Alex’s breath stopped.

He remembered the document.

He had been twenty-six.

His father was ill.

Evelyn had put a stack of administrative papers in front of him.

He signed them.

He never read Daniel’s full case.

Maya’s eyes moved from the page to his face.

“You signed it.”

Alex did not lie.

“Yes.”

Her lips parted slightly.

“You helped finish what they started.”

His throat tightened.

“Yes.”

Grant leaned back.

Power returned to him.

The man defending Maya had just been revealed as part of the machine that destroyed her father.

Then Maya whispered:

“My father tried to call you.”

Alex frowned.

“What?”

She looked toward Evelyn.

“My father told me he called Alex before he died.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Alex saw it.

“He said someone in this house made sure Alex never heard the message.”

May you like

Evelyn’s hand slowly moved away from the table.

And Alex knew before she spoke that the message had existed.
