Chapter 11

Evelyn sat down.

She looked suddenly older.

Grant did not.

He straightened.

The arrogance remained.

Maybe because it was all he had left.

“You all benefited from that system.”

His voice carried through the council chamber.

“Don't pretend I invented hypocrisy.”

Nobody answered.

Grant looked at Alex.

“Your father buried it.”

Then Evelyn.

“You buried it.”

Then Maya.

“Your father agreed to it.”

Maya’s eyes hardened.

“For days.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

She continued.

“You made it twenty years.”

That distinction silenced him.

Alex looked toward the capos.

“The council review continues.”

Grant laughed.

“You're still pretending procedure matters?”

“Yes.”

That answer confused him.

Alex did not demand immediate removal.

He submitted the invoice evidence, burner-phone records, hidden-camera footage, and archive materials to outside counsel and forensic review.

Grant watched his control leave through paperwork and witnesses rather than fists.

He hated it.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I want to give a statement.”

Grant turned.

“Don't.”

Her eyes rose toward him.

The old instinct to obey him was gone.

“You told me Maya was repeating her father’s lies.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“You wanted to believe that.”

“Yes.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That part is mine.”

Her hands trembled.

“But you knew the truth.”

Grant said nothing.

Evelyn continued.

“You knew and still let me punish her.”

Her voice broke.

“And Rosie.”

Maya looked away.

Evelyn swallowed.

Grant stared.

No apology came from him.

Instead:

“You did what you wanted.”

Evelyn flinched.

“Don't make me responsible for your conscience.”

That sentence severed whatever remained between them.

Evelyn removed her pearl bracelet.

Placed it on the table.

Then her family committee pin.

“I resign.”

Grant’s eyes widened.

Not because he loved her position.

Because he needed it.

Evelyn controlled several household and hospitality contracts Grant still relied on.

Without her protection, his current financial network became easier to expose.

Alex saw him calculate.

So did Maya.

Power shifted again.

Then the forensic accountant entered with one last preliminary finding.

Grant had prepared for exactly this possibility.

If Evelyn withdrew her support, three Northstar contracts automatically transferred to another Vance relative.

Alex looked up.

“Who?”

The accountant swallowed.

“Maya.”

Her face went blank.

May you like

Grant smiled.

He had built the money trail so that if he fell, Alex’s wife could appear to be the beneficiary.
