Chapter 10

Anthony sounded weak.
But clear.
Raymond stole from us.
Nobody moved.
He used Daniel’s approvals, then changed the invoices afterward.
Grant closed his eyes.
Anthony continued.
Daniel agreed to take responsibility for a short period because Raymond’s outside partners were threatening retaliation.
Maya’s breathing broke.
Her father’s story was finally being spoken by the man who could have cleared him.
Then Anthony said:
Evelyn thinks replacing the money fixes this.
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
It doesn't.
A long pause on the recording.
Then:
And Grant knows more than Evelyn thinks.
Grant’s head lifted.
The room tightened.
Anthony explained.
At twenty, Grant discovered his father’s scheme.
He did not report it.
He helped Raymond destroy one set of vendor records.
Not because Raymond ordered him.
Because Grant wanted his father to respect him.
Grant’s jaw clenched.
The recording continued.
Daniel caught him.
And still asked me to spare the boy publicly.
Maya closed her eyes.
Her father had protected Grant even after Grant helped destroy him.
Then came the major twist.
Anthony’s breathing became rougher.
There is one reason Evelyn keeps protecting Raymond and Grant beyond blood.
Evelyn’s face lost color.
Grant looked at her.
Anthony continued.
Years ago, Evelyn borrowed from Raymond without telling me.
Not money.
Authority.
Alex stared.
Raymond had helped Evelyn quietly build a separate network of vendors and loyal household businesses because she feared Anthony’s leadership would leave her powerless if he died.
Those accounts eventually became the mechanism Raymond used for theft.
If Raymond’s full scheme became public, it would also expose that Evelyn had created the shadow structure he exploited.
She had not stolen.
But she had secretly built the system.
That was why she buried Daniel’s exoneration.
Clearing him completely would expose her own role in giving Raymond the tools.
Maya stared at Evelyn.
“You let my father die guilty to protect yourself.”
Evelyn’s lips trembled.
“I was protecting the family.”
“No.”
Maya’s voice barely rose.
“You were protecting the version of yourself the family respected.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
But Anthony had not finished.
The recording shifted.
And if Grant ever learns Evelyn buried this, he will use her guilt against her.
Grant went still.
Alex looked toward him.
Grant already knew.
He had found the tape two years earlier.
Not this copy.
Another.
He learned everything.
His father’s theft.
Daniel’s innocence.
Evelyn’s role.
And instead of exposing it—
he reproduced the old scheme.
Same vendor structures.
Same inflated billing.
Same method of making someone else appear responsible.
Grant had spent two years proving that the crime which protected his father could still protect him.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You knew?”
Grant said nothing.
Her voice cracked.
“You knew what Raymond did?”
Silence.
“And you let me keep blaming Maya’s father?”
Grant finally looked at her.
“Because it kept you useful.”
The words landed harder than a slap.
May you like
Evelyn’s hand slipped from the recorder.
For the first time, she understood that the son she had protected as an extension of her brother had been protecting nothing except himself.
