Chapter 1

Nobody in the hallway moved.
The golf club lay at Preston’s feet.
Giulietta stood inside the bridal suite in a white gown that had taken six months to design, her engagement ring resting on the vanity behind her like something already belonging to another life.
Warren looked past her.
Six Marconi capos filled the corridor.
Behind them stood twelve bodyguards.
His expression changed only around the eyes.
A small contraction.
Giulietta noticed.
“Close the door.”
Her voice was quiet.
One of her men pulled it shut.
Now Warren and Preston were inside with her.
Preston pushed himself upright from the sofa.
His breath came hard through his nose.
“You planned this.”
Giulietta turned toward him.
“No.”
A pause.
“I planned for the possibility that you were exactly what you just proved yourself to be.”
Preston’s hand tightened.
Warren stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Giulietta looked at him.
He was sixty-six, silver-haired, perfectly dressed, and still carried himself like a man accustomed to entering rooms where other people lowered their voices.
“Your son locked a door.”
Her eyes moved toward the club.
“Then raised that.”
Warren’s jaw barely shifted.
“He lost his temper.”
Preston looked at his father.
Not shame.
Recognition.
Giulietta saw it.
Something passed between them.
Too practiced.
Too calm.
Her breathing slowed.
“Interesting.”
Warren frowned.
“What?”
“You aren't surprised.”
Silence.
Preston looked away first.
Giulietta stepped closer.
“You walked in with a key.”
Warren’s fingers tightened around his signet ring.
“You're turning a family argument into theater.”
“No.”
Giulietta’s voice softened further.
“You brought the key to the theater.”
That landed.
One of the bodyguards behind her entered and handed Giulietta a leather folder.
Her consigliere, Luca Ferretti, followed him.
Luca had served the Marconi family since Giulietta was twelve.
He had stood beside her father.
Taught Giulietta how to read contracts.
How to spot fear.
How to wait before answering.
His face was pale.
“Giulietta.”
She looked at him.
“What?”
His breathing was wrong.
Too shallow.
He held out another document.
“The Hale attorneys filed this twenty minutes ago.”
Warren’s eyes closed for half a second.
Giulietta saw it.
She opened the folder.
The document was a pre-execution amendment to the Marconi-Hale consolidation agreement.
If Giulietta became legally unavailable, detained, medically incapacitated, or removed from executive authority before the final closing—
temporary voting control over three Marconi logistics companies would pass to the joint marital trust.
The trust would be co-managed by Preston.
Giulietta read the clause twice.
Then looked at the golf club.
Then at Warren.
Preston’s face went still.
Giulietta slowly raised the paper.
“You weren't trying to make me obey.”
No one answered.
Her eyes sharpened.
“You were trying to make me react.”
May you like
And behind the mirror over the vanity—
a tiny red recording light blinked once.
