Chapter 5

Marcello finally answered.

His voice sounded weak.

Too weak.

“Giulietta?”

She stood in the bridal suite with Preston, Warren, Luca, and six armed men listening.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“No.”

Silence.

Giulietta looked at her security chief.

He was already tracing the call.

Marcello sighed.

“You always did hear lies too quickly.”

“Where are you?”

“A place where we can speak without your men.”

Giulietta’s fingers tightened around the phone.

“You put a camera in my bridal suite.”

“No.”

“Luca did.”

Another pause.

“You always were precise.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“Why?”

Marcello breathed slowly into the line.

“Because you were going to ruin everything your father built.”

The words did not surprise her.

The certainty did.

“You mean everything you wanted.”

“I mean stability.”

Giulietta laughed once.

Cold.

“My groom just tried to hit me with a golf club.”

“And you handled him.”

Marcello’s answer came immediately.

That stopped her.

He knew.

Already.

The trace returned.

Marcello was not at home.

His phone was inside a private club in Westchester owned by one of Warren’s holding companies.

Giulietta looked at Warren.

He saw that she knew.

“You hid him.”

Warren shook his head.

“He came voluntarily.”

Giulietta put the phone on speaker.

Marcello continued.

“Your father spent thirty years building alliances you started dismantling in twelve months.”

Her jaw tightened.

After her father’s death, Giulietta had closed several smuggling routes, moved family capital into legitimate logistics, and removed older capos from operational control.

Marcello hated it.

He called it surrender.

Giulietta called it survival.

Marcello saw the Hale marriage as a correction.

Preston would anchor her.

Warren would bring old-money discipline.

Marcello would retain influence.

Giulietta’s voice lowered.

“So you wanted me married.”

“Yes.”

“And obedient.”

Marcello hesitated.

That hesitation told her enough.

Then he said:

“I wanted you contained.”

The room went silent.

Preston looked toward the floor.

Warren did not.

Giulietta’s expression changed.

Not hurt.

Clarity.

“You thought marriage was a cage.”

Marcello's voice softened.

“I thought it was balance.”

Giulietta looked at Luca.

At Warren.

At Preston.

Every man in the room had used a different word for the same thing.

Protection.

Stability.

Balance.

Control.

Then Marcello delivered the first real blow.

“You think your father would have approved what you’re doing?”

Giulietta said nothing.

Marcello continued.

“He approved the Hale alliance before he died.”

Her breathing stopped.

“No.”

“I have his letter.”

Warren looked at her.

Preston did too.

Giulietta’s eyes narrowed.

Marcello’s final words came quietly.

“And he gave me authority to make sure you went through with it.”
