Chapter 21

Preston returned to Marconi business when he was thirty-six.
For exactly twelve minutes.
Not as fiancé.
Not as partner.
As a bidder.
Hale Infrastructure had survived smaller.
Different leadership.
Warren had stepped back.
Preston held no chief-executive title.
He ran one operating division.
That mattered.
The Marconi company opened bids for a cold-storage project.
Hale submitted one.
Best price.
Strong engineering.
High reputational risk.
The procurement committee shortlisted it.
Giulietta saw the name.
Her body reacted before her mind.
Wedding.
Golf club.
Camera.
Then:
“Continue normal review.”
The committee chair looked at her.
“You want to recuse?”
Good question.
Giulietta thought.
“Yes.”
Another pause.
“From final vendor selection.”
Not because Preston controlled her.
Because personal history was a conflict.
Different.
The committee selected Hale.
Giulietta hated that.
Then reviewed the process.
Clean.
Independent.
Documented.
She signed the conflict acknowledgment.
Not the award.
Months later the project began.
Preston never contacted her privately.
All communication through the project team.
Good.
Then a safety issue emerged.
Hale’s site manager ignored a subcontractor complaint about load limits.
No injuries.
Close.
The Marconi project director suspended work.
Preston flew in.
Giulietta attended the review because executive escalation required it.
First room together for business in years.
Preston sat across from her.
No romance.
No history mentioned.
The project director presented evidence.
Preston listened.
Then said:
“Terminate my site manager.”
One Hale lawyer turned.
“That’s premature.”
Preston looked at him.
“No.”
Giulietta watched.
Old Preston would have protected status first.
Still, one correct decision did not become transformation.
The investigation found the manager had ignored two warnings.
Termination stood.
Hale absorbed delay costs under the contract.
Preston did not ask Giulietta for relief.
That mattered.
After the meeting, they reached the elevator together.
Silence.
Then Giulietta said:
“You handled that correctly.”
Preston looked at her.
The compliment landed too heavily.
She saw it.
So did he.
He exhaled.
“Thank you.”
No:
Does that change anything?
Good.
Then he said:
“I almost defended him.”
Giulietta looked over.
“Why?”
“My hire.”
There it was.
Authority protecting itself.
“Then?”
“I remembered my father defending me because admitting what I did meant admitting what he taught.”
The elevator doors opened.
Giulietta stepped inside.
Preston remained outside.
Different floors.
Different destinations.
“Useful memory,” she said.
“Yes.”
Doors closed.
That was all.
Months later the cold-storage facility opened.
No photograph of Giulietta and Preston.
No article about former lovers rebuilding trust.

Just a project.
Sometimes accountability became most convincing when nobody turned it into a story.
