Chapter 16

The first person to challenge Giulietta’s new governance rules was Giulietta.
That irritated her.
Two years after the canceled wedding, a Marconi logistics subsidiary wanted to purchase three warehouses near Newark.
The opportunity was good.
The price was better.
Giulietta wanted the deal.
Her new investment committee did not.
Three outside directors.
Two Marconi executives.
Independent counsel.
No capo votes.
No private approval.
The committee chair looked across the table.
“The environmental exposure is too uncertain.”
Giulietta’s fingers rested against the folder.
“We can reserve against it.”
“Not enough.”
“The seller will indemnify.”
“Seller has weak capitalization.”
Giulietta felt the room change.
Old instinct.
Push harder.
Make them understand.
She knew more about ports than everyone at the table.
More about the seller.
More about the neighborhood.
More about what losing the deal would cost.
Her voice lowered.
“We’re buying.”
Silence.
The committee chair looked at her.
“No.”
Nobody breathed normally.
Giulietta heard her father in her own head.
Authority ends uncertainty.
Then Marcello.
Contain.
Control.
Then herself.
Choice does.
She leaned back.
“Show me.”
The committee did.
Groundwater liability.
Insurance exclusions.
A pending federal review.
Not certain disaster.
Enough uncertainty.
Giulietta hated the report.
That did not make it wrong.
The acquisition died.
Three months later the environmental review expanded.
The seller’s value collapsed.
Luca brought the article into Giulietta’s office.
He remained in his advisory role.
No signing authority.
No private archive access.
Still.
He placed the paper down.
“You were wrong.”
Giulietta looked at him.
“You seem happy.”
“A little.”
Dangerous.
She almost smiled.
Then:
“What would old Luca have done?”
He understood.
Before.
When he believed his job included balancing her without telling her.
“I would have tried to delay you quietly.”
“Instead?”
“I voted no.”
“Through the committee.”
“Yes.”
“And survived.”
“So far.”
Good.
That afternoon Giulietta revised one internal rule.
Not because the system had failed.
Because it had worked.
Major investments would now include written dissent preserved in the record even when she won the vote.
One senior capo complained.
“You want proof people disagreed with you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So nobody has to remember privately later.”
That sentence mattered.
Her father had preserved secrets.
Giulietta would preserve disagreement.
Different archive.
Different purpose.
Months later Preston heard about the warehouse deal through industry news.
He sent no message.
No congratulations.
No:
I told you restraint mattered.
Good.
At another foundation gala, they saw each other from across the room.
Preston nodded.
Giulietta nodded back.
Nothing more.
She noticed something anyway.
He no longer watched to see whether she came closer.
That was new.
Not enough.
Still new.
Giulietta returned to her table.
The chairman beside her asked:
“Old friend?”
She looked toward Preston.
“No.”
A pause.
“Old future.”
The chairman looked confused.
Giulietta smiled faintly.
May you like
“That’s fine.”
Not everything needed a category that survived forever.
