Chapter 14

Marcello entered the ballroom.

Sixty-two years old.

Silver hair.

Black tuxedo.

No shame.

He looked at the ruined wedding arrangements.

Then at Giulietta.

“You canceled a very expensive ceremony.”

Giulietta’s hands rested at her sides.

“You tried to cancel my authority.”

He smiled.

“Still dramatic.”

Preston stepped forward.

Marcello barely looked at him.

That insult landed.

Warren noticed.

“So I was disposable.”

Marcello turned.

“You were useful.”

Warren’s jaw tightened.

Preston laughed bitterly.

“Runs in the family, I guess.”

Marcello looked toward Luca.

“You told her.”

Luca met his eyes.

“Yes.”

“About everything?”

“Yes.”

Marcello sighed.

Disappointed.

Not afraid.

Giulietta watched.

“What do you still think you have?”

His smile returned.

“Your father.”

She did not react.

Marcello removed a sealed envelope.

He placed it on the table.

Her father's handwriting.

Again.

Giulietta did not touch it.

“What is it?”

“The final succession letter.”

Her breathing stopped.

Marcello continued.

“You think your father fully trusted you?”

Silence.

“He didn't.”

Giulietta looked at Luca.

He looked confused.

Genuine.

Marcello smiled.

“He gave me emergency removal authority if you became unstable.”

Warren watched Giulietta carefully.

Preston too.

This was Marcello’s last move.

Make Giulietta doubt the dead man she still loved.

Make her angry.

Make her reactive.

Give the capos the old version of her.

Giulietta picked up the envelope.

Opened it.

Read.

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Grief.

Her father had indeed written concerns.

She was twenty-four.

He feared her temper.

Her tendency to retaliate personally.

Her difficulty separating insult from threat.

But the letter did not give Marcello permanent authority.

It required unanimous approval from five senior capos.

Independent medical assessment.

And documented incapacity.

Marcello had removed those pages.

Again.

Giulietta looked up.

“You always cut the document where your power ends.”

His smile disappeared.

She handed the full letter to the capos.

One by one they read it.

No one raised a hand against her.

Marcello’s eyes hardened.

“You think this proves you're fit?”

Giulietta looked toward the golf club still preserved in an evidence bag.

Then toward Preston.

Then Warren.

Then Luca.

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“Today proves I still have things to change.”

A pause.

“But you don't get to turn my flaws into your throne.”

Marcello’s breathing changed.

That was the moment he lost.

Not when accounts froze.

Not when capos confessed.

When Giulietta refused to defend herself as perfect.

Blackmail needed shame.

She had stopped giving him any.

Marcello turned toward the door.

Two bodyguards stepped aside.

He looked surprised.

“You're letting me leave?”

Giulietta’s eyes stayed on him.

“You came voluntarily.”

“What about punishment?”

Her voice dropped.

“It already started.”

Marcello frowned.

Her attorney entered behind him.

Every board he sat on had received suspension notices.

His accounts were under forensic review.

His trustee authority terminated.

His access revoked.

His co-conspirators were cooperating.

He could walk out of the room.

But the world he expected to control was gone.

Marcello looked at Giulietta.

For the first time, he looked old.

Then he whispered:

“Your father would hate what you've become.”

Giulietta’s eyes softened.

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But he isn't here to rule me either.”

Marcello left.

Nobody stopped him.

Then Giulietta turned toward Preston.

One unresolved matter remained.

Their relationship.
