Chapter 11

Luca did not deny it.

Not this time.

His shoulders lowered.

His hands remained open.

“I gave Marcello access.”

Giulietta’s breathing became audible for the first time.

“When?”

“After your father died.”

“Why?”

Luca looked toward the floor.

“Because I thought you were going to tear everything apart.”

There it was.

The closest betrayal.

Not blackmail.

Not Daniel.

Belief.

Luca had agreed with Marcello once.

Giulietta was too young.

Too angry.

Too determined to dismantle older operations.

He believed Marcello’s experience would balance her.

So he gave him archive access.

Temporary.

Unofficial.

A compromise.

Then Marcello copied the disciplinary ledger.

Luca discovered it months later.

By then, admitting it meant admitting he had undermined Giulietta at the beginning of her leadership.

Then Daniel’s debt gave Marcello another leash.

Giulietta looked at him.

“You stood beside me every day.”

“Yes.”

“You told me to trust my instincts.”

“Yes.”

“And every time I wondered why Marcello knew things he shouldn't—”

Luca’s eyes filled.

“I lied.”

Giulietta turned away.

That movement hurt him more than anger.

Warren watched.

Even he understood not to speak.

Luca whispered:

“I thought I could contain him.”

Giulietta looked back.

“Every man in this room keeps saying that.”

A long silence.

“Contain Preston.”

“Contain me.”

“Contain Marcello.”

“Contain the truth.”

Luca’s breath broke.

Giulietta continued.

“You all mistook control for competence.”

Luca lowered his head.

She removed his Marconi security pin.

Not violently.

Two fingers.

A tiny click.

“You're suspended.”

He nodded.

“From everything.”

Another nod.

He did not ask forgiveness.

That mattered.

Then Preston stepped toward Giulietta.

Slowly.

Hands visible.

“I want to see what Marcello sent me.”

She studied him.

“Why?”

His jaw trembled.

“Because I need to know whether I came into this room angry at you for a lie.”

Giulietta had the fabricated packet recovered from his phone.

She showed him.

Messages that looked like hers.

A bank transfer that appeared to move Hale funds into a competing company.

A fake note calling Preston “useful until after the wedding.”

Preston read it all.

His face changed piece by piece.

Anger.

Humiliation.

Then shame.

“I believed it.”

Giulietta said nothing.

Preston looked at her.

“That doesn't excuse what I did.”

“No.”

“I still picked up the club.”

“Yes.”

His breathing broke.

“And I said what I said about my mother.”

Giulietta’s eyes remained hard.

“Yes.”

Preston looked toward Warren.

His father did not meet his eyes.

Then Preston asked:

“Did you really teach Mom that way?”

Warren’s hand tightened around his cane.

He could have lied.

For once, he didn't.

“Yes.”

Preston closed his eyes.

The room sat in that silence.

Then Warren said something nobody expected.

“I thought fear kept people from leaving.”

Preston looked at him.

Warren’s voice roughened.

“It only made them leave in their heads first.”

The explanation did not absolve him.

But it was the first honest sentence Preston had heard from his father all day.

Then Giulietta’s attorney entered.

Marcello had begun moving money.

Not from Marconi accounts.

From Hale accounts.

May you like

Warren’s face sharpened.

Marcello was emptying the Hales while everyone remained trapped in the wedding scandal.
