Chapter 12

Warren did not ask Giulietta for help.
That surprised her.
He called his own attorneys.
Froze his accounts.
Ordered an internal review.
Preston watched him.
Something changed between them.
Warren had spent decades solving problems through command.
Now he was forced to admit another man had outplayed him.
Giulietta turned toward her capos.
“Marcello expects retaliation.”
One man nodded.
“So we don't give him that.”
Another looked confused.
“He's stealing from two families.”
“Yes.”
Her voice stayed calm.
“And he wants us angry enough to become predictable.”
She ordered every Marconi account Marcello could touch frozen through legal and banking channels.
Access cards revoked.
Properties flagged.
No one was to drag Marcello out of Westchester.
No one was to threaten staff.
No one was to burn anything.
One older capo frowned.
“Your father would have sent men.”
Giulietta looked at him.
“My father also left a ledger designed to control you after mistakes you already paid for.”
The man went silent.
“Not every tradition deserves loyalty.”
Warren heard.
So did Preston.
The power dynamic changed again.
Giulietta no longer needed the wedding to prove who led.
Then her attorney brought another discovery.
Marcello had transferred Hale funds into a shell company.
The shell company was linked to the same lender holding Daniel Ferretti’s debt.
Luca looked up sharply.
Giulietta understood.
Marcello had not merely used Daniel’s debt.
He helped create it.
Daniel’s supposedly independent lender had been financed through an entity Marcello controlled.
Luca went pale.
“No.”
The documents were clear.
Marcello invested in the lender six months before Daniel’s brokerage received its loan.
He knew the terms.
He knew the collateral.
He knew Daniel would likely fail after losing his largest client—
a client whose contract had been quietly withdrawn by another company connected to Marcello.
Luca's legs weakened.
He sat.
“He engineered it.”
Giulietta looked at him.
“Yes.”
Luca’s eyes filled.
“He broke my son’s company so he could use me.”
No one spoke.
Now even Luca’s later betrayal looked different.
Still his choice.
But Marcello had built the pressure deliberately.
Giulietta crouched in front of him.
His eyes lifted.
“This does not erase what you did.”
“I know.”
“But it tells us what he does.”
Luca swallowed.
“He creates the wound.”
Giulietta nodded.
“Then offers the bandage.”
Preston heard the sentence.
His face changed.
“So did he create mine?”
Giulietta looked at him.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
That uncertainty mattered.
Then Warren’s attorney called.
Marcello had not just moved Hale money.
He had scheduled a transfer of Marconi port concessions to a new joint entity at midnight.
The authorization required one final biometric approval.
Giulietta’s.
Warren frowned.
“She'll never give it.”
The attorney looked uncomfortable.
“The system already shows a pending biometric file.”
Giulietta’s hand went still.
Someone had captured her biometric authorization earlier that day.
