Chapter 19

Giulietta dated someone when she was thirty-one.

The family reacted badly.

That pleased her more than it should have.

His name was Adrian Cole.

Corporate litigator.

No criminal-family history.

No shipping company.

No father negotiating ports.

They met during an unrelated compliance conference.

The first dinner lasted ninety minutes.

Giulietta told nobody.

The second lasted three hours.

Luca noticed.

Of course.

“You’re disappearing.”

“For dinner.”

“With?”

She looked at him.

He stopped.

Good.

By the fourth date, tabloids noticed.

MARCONI HEIRESS WITH MANHATTAN ATTORNEY.

Giulietta hated heir.

Still.

Preston saw the photograph.

She knew because he sent one message.

I hope he treats you well.

Giulietta stared at it.

Then replied:

Thank you.

Nothing else.

That mattered.

No jealousy presented as protection.

No warning.

No sudden investigation.

Adrian learned about the bridal-suite story from public records.

Not Giulietta.

He asked once.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

That answer attracted her more than expected.

Six months later, Adrian made his first serious mistake.

He asked Giulietta to let his firm review a Marconi regulatory matter.

She became cold immediately.

“No.”

He blinked.

“It’s what we do.”

“You’re dating me.”

“Yes.”

“So no.”

Adrian frowned.

“You think I’d misuse information?”

Wrong question.

Giulietta felt anger.

Then stopped.

“No.”

Another pause.

“I think personal access should not create professional access.”

He thought.

Then nodded.

“Fair.”

That should have been enough.

Instead Adrian added:

“You know, most people don't treat every overlap like corruption.”

Giulietta’s face changed.

There it was.

Not Marcello.

Not Preston.

A normal disagreement.

Still irritating.

“Most people didn’t spend their wedding watching family and business authority become the same weapon.”

Adrian went quiet.

Then:

“Also fair.”

They survived.

Good.

A year later they did not.

No betrayal.

No abuse.

No conspiracy.

Adrian wanted children soon.

Giulietta did not know if she wanted them at all.

He wanted a quieter life outside Marconi scrutiny.

She had no intention of abandoning leadership to make partnership easier.

They ended over dinner.

Painfully.

Respectfully.

That confused several relatives.

“What happened?”

Nothing.

That was difficult for people raised around dramatic endings.

Sometimes love was real.

Sometimes incompatibility was too.

Preston heard.

Sent nothing.

Also good.

Months later they spoke at a foundation dinner.

“You okay?”

Giulietta stared.

Then:

“Mostly.”

Preston smiled slightly.

Family word, apparently.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“That it ended.”

She nodded.

“Thank you.”

No opportunity taken.

No:

Maybe us.

Preston left first.

Giulietta watched him go.

Years earlier he would have treated an empty place beside her as evidence he might fill it.

May you like

Now he left it empty.

That mattered more than she wanted to admit.
