Chapter 1

Raffaele did not look at Grant after the man disappeared beneath the fallen jackets and helmet boxes.
He looked at Rebecca.
Black shoe polish stained the paving around Vanessa, broken brushes rolled beneath the catering tables, and every guest in the courtyard had gone silent.
Rebecca still held her arms as though the dirty plates were there.
Raffaele crouched in front of her.
His voice changed instantly.
Soft.
Measured.
“Show me your hands.”
Rebecca opened them.
Small red pressure marks crossed both palms.
Raffaele’s thumb hovered over one without touching.
His jaw tightened.
“How long were you carrying plates?”
Rebecca looked toward Vanessa.
Her breathing became shallow.
Vanessa saw it.
“So now we’re interrogating toddlers?”
Raffaele slowly lifted his eyes.
Vanessa’s confidence did not disappear.
Her shoulders stayed straight.
Her wedding ring flashed as she folded her arms.
Raffaele said nothing.
The silence lasted long enough for her mouth to tighten.
Rebecca finally whispered:
“Since breakfast.”
Raffaele’s gaze became completely still.
The charity rally had not officially opened until noon.
Samuel stood beside Adrian with both hands trembling.
Jacob’s knees were dirty from the stone.
Raffaele looked at Vanessa.
“You had them working all morning?”
Vanessa exhaled through her nose.
“They needed discipline.”
“For what?”
No answer.
Adrian stepped forward.
His shirt was stretched where Grant had grabbed him.
Raffaele noticed the boy’s right hand remained closed around something.
“What happened?”
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Then Grant.
Grant had pushed himself partly upright.
The moment his eyes dropped to Adrian’s fist, his breathing changed.
Raffaele caught it.
“Open your hand.”
Adrian hesitated.
Then slowly unfolded his fingers.
A small metallic sticker lay in his palm.
Part of a motorcycle helmet certification label.
Grant went pale.
Vanessa’s hand stopped against her ring.
Raffaele looked at the number printed across the torn label.
Adrian’s voice came out tight.
“I found it inside one of Uncle Grant’s helmet boxes.”
Raffaele turned it over.
“What’s special about it?”
Adrian swallowed.
His eyes flicked toward Samuel and Jacob.
Then back to Raffaele.
“It’s the same number that was on Dad’s helmet when he died.”

Grant stopped struggling.
The punishment of the children had just become connected to a Moretti death.
