Chapter 10

The counterfeit labels changed everything.
Grant had imported a cheaper batch of helmets during a cash crisis.
He intended to use them only for display inventory while certified units went to riders.
Then a shipping delay threatened the charity rally.
Hundreds of riders had already registered.
Sponsors were arriving.
Canceling would expose Grant’s company as unstable and cost the Moretti charity a fortune.
Grant made the decision.
He relabeled the cheaper helmets as certified premium units.
Vanessa found out the morning before the rally.
Not after Luca died.
Before.
That was the major betrayal.
She confronted Grant in her office.
Grant told her the cheaper helmets were still safe enough.
He said the certification difference was technical.
He begged for one day.
If Raffaele discovered the shortage, Grant’s company would collapse and Vanessa’s brother would be finished.
Vanessa chose him.
She allowed the rally to proceed.
Luca received one of the relabeled helmets.
Vanessa knew he might.
She did not know he would crash.
She did not intend for anyone to be hurt.
But she knew riders were being handed equipment that had not been certified as promised.
After Luca died, the laboratory report confirmed the risk she had already gambled on.
Then she helped Grant erase the trail.
The hidden replacement program.
The altered invoices.
The missing labels.
The silence around Adrian.
All of it started from a choice Vanessa made before Luca ever mounted his motorcycle.
Raffaele sat across from his wife.
For several seconds he could hear only her breathing.
Vanessa’s hands trembled openly now.
“I thought Grant was telling the truth.”
Raffaele’s voice barely rose above a whisper.
“You thought he was worth the risk.”
Tears slid down her face.
“Yes.”
Raffaele looked toward Grant.
Grant’s arrogance was gone.
“I told her nobody would get hurt.”
Raffaele nodded slowly.
“And then somebody did.”
Grant lowered his eyes.
Vanessa whispered:
“I loved Luca.”
Raffaele’s expression changed.
“That's what makes this worse.”
She covered her mouth.
Raffaele continued.
“You didn't hate him.”
A pause.
“You decided your brother’s future mattered more than Luca’s right to know what was on his head.”
Vanessa broke down.
Raffaele did not move toward her.
Then Adrian appeared in the doorway.
Nobody had heard him approach.
He had heard enough.
His eyes were fixed on Vanessa.
Raffaele stood.
Adrian spoke before anyone could stop him.
“You knew before Dad rode?”
May you like
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
That question would destroy far more than her marriage.
