Chapter 8

Vanessa requested the test nine days after the funeral.
The engineer sent his initial findings directly to her.
The helmet shell did not meet the composition expected from the certified model.
He recommended laboratory testing.
Vanessa approved it.
Raffaele stared at her across the long table.
“You tested it.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
She closed her eyes.
“I got the report.”
Raffaele’s hand slowly curled.
“What did it say?”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
Before she answered, Grant spoke from the other end of the room.
“It said the helmet might fail certification.”
Raffaele turned.
Grant no longer looked arrogant.
He looked tired.
But his chin remained high.
“It did not say the helmet caused the crash.”
“No.”
Raffaele agreed.
“That distinction matters.”
Grant looked surprised.
Raffaele continued.
“It does not explain why you hid the defect.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“Because one failed batch would've ended the company before we knew the scope.”
“You mean before everyone knew the scope.”
Grant’s nostrils flared.
Raffaele looked back to Vanessa.
“You read the report?”
“Yes.”
“What did you do?”
Her hands folded together so tightly her knuckles whitened.
“I told Grant.”
“Anyone else?”
“No.”
“Me?”
“No.”
“Luca’s sons?”
Tears formed.
“No.”
Raffaele looked toward Adrian.
The twelve-year-old’s face had gone rigid.
He was trying not to cry in front of adults.
Raffaele noticed.
Grant did too.
For the first time, Grant looked ashamed.
Then the safety engineer sent the original email chain.
Raffaele opened it.
Vanessa had replied to the engineer.
Please hold external notification until our internal review is complete.
Raffaele read the sentence twice.
Then another email appeared underneath.
Grant had responded privately to Vanessa:
If Raffaele sees this before we replace the batch, he’ll destroy the company and probably me with it.
Vanessa answered:
Give me ten days.
Adrian stood abruptly.
His chair scraped across the floor.
Raffaele looked at him.
Adrian’s chest rose sharply.
“Ten days?”
Nobody answered.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Dad was already dead.”
His voice cracked.
“You weren't protecting him.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Adrian understood before Raffaele did.

They had not hidden the defect to prevent tragedy.
They had hidden it to protect themselves from the tragedy that had already happened.
