Chapter 2

Raffaele cleared the courtyard.

Guests were moved inside.

No photographs.

No speeches.

The charity rally stopped.

Vanessa followed him toward the private lounge.

“You’re shutting down an entire event because a child found a sticker?”

Raffaele did not turn.

“Because your brother tried to hit the child holding it.”

Grant’s footsteps stopped behind them.

Raffaele heard them.

He kept walking.

Adrian sat at the long table with Rebecca, Samuel, and Jacob beside him.

The three younger children were eating.

Adrian was not.

Raffaele placed the label in front of him.

“Tell me from the beginning.”

Adrian rubbed both hands against his trousers.

His breathing was uneven now that the danger had passed.

Samuel looked at him.

“You can tell Uncle Raff.”

Adrian glanced toward the four-year-old.

Something softened in his face.

Then he looked at Raffaele.

Two days earlier, Adrian had gone into the equipment room looking for a missing boxing wrap.

Grant was inside opening helmet cartons.

Adrian noticed that several expensive helmet boxes contained cheaper models.

The certification stickers had been peeled away.

Grant caught him watching.

“He told me it was inventory stuff.”

“What did you do?”

“I left.”

Raffaele waited.

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Then I went back.”

Raffaele almost smiled.

Of course he had.

The boy found discarded labels inside a trash bag.

One number looked familiar.

Why?

After Adrian’s father Luca died in a motorcycle crash eighteen months earlier, Adrian had memorized details from the accident report.

Road.

Time.

Bike model.

Helmet serial number.

Everything.

A twelve-year-old trying to make chaos obey numbers.

Raffaele’s throat tightened.

Adrian continued.

“When Grant saw the label missing this morning, he asked me if I took something.”

“And you said?”

“No.”

Grant laughed from across the room.

“He’s been sneaking through restricted areas for months.”

Raffaele turned.

Grant held his stare confidently.

Then Adrian spoke again.

“He said if I didn’t give it back, Samuel and Jacob would learn what happens when I make trouble.”

Raffaele’s eyes shifted.

The younger boys stopped eating.

Vanessa’s fingers tightened.

“That is not what happened.”

Adrian looked at her.

His voice shook, but he did not lower it.

“You told him to make them useful until I talked.”

Raffaele stared at his wife.

Vanessa’s face hardened.

She had been punishing three younger children to pressure a twelve-year-old into surrendering evidence.

Then Samuel whispered:

“Grant already knew where Adrian hid the rest.”

Raffaele slowly turned toward him.

“What rest?”

Samuel pointed toward Adrian’s wristwatch.

May you like

Adrian’s face drained.

The label in his hand had never been the evidence Grant truly wanted.
